Born on this day #otd in 1906: Dmitri Shostakovich. Written in 1943, his Eighth Symphony is one of his darkest and most intense works. Its third movement, Allegro non troppo, is a relentless orchestral toccata, driven by an almost continuous pulse. Here, the trumpet cuts through the orchestra in one of the movement’s most striking moments, conducted by Valery Gergiev. #shostakovich #shostakovich8 #valerygergiev #classicalmusic

🎻 After a brief introduction, the timpani strikes down with brutal force. The brass erupts like detonations, turning the stage into a battlefield. Amid the smoke and fire, what is it that you seek to achieve? 🎵 Conductor: Semyon Bychkov 🎶 Orchestra: WDR Symphony Orchestra 🎞 Youtube | ARD Klassik
Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 Imagine writing this music during a war… and years later, sitting quietly in the audience while Leonard Bernstein conducts it right in front of you. This is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, the “Leningrad.” He began writing it in 1941, while Leningrad was under siege. The city was starving. People were dying. Bombs were falling. And somehow, Shostakovich kept writing. The symphony became more than music. It became a portrait of a city refusing to disappear. Then, eighteen years later, Shostakovich was sitting in Moscow while Leonard Bernstein stood before the New York Philharmonic and conducted the first movement of his Seventh. Bernstein was everything Shostakovich was not. Bernstein was energetic, expressive, impossible to ignore. Shostakovich was quiet, reserved, almost uncomfortable with attention. And there he was, watching this enormous American conductor bring his music back to life. You can actually see Shostakovich in the footage. For a man who wrote music capable of filling an entire hall with terror, grief and defiance, he looks almost painfully shy when Bernstein turns the attention toward him. Two completely different personalities. One enormous piece of music. And somewhere between Bernstein’s hands and Shostakovich’s silence, you can feel the strange journey this symphony had taken — from a city at war to a concert hall in Moscow. If you were Shostakovich, what would you feel watching someone else conduct the music you wrote in the middle of war? #Shostakovich #SymphonyNo7 #LeningradSymphony #LeonardBernstein #ClassicalMusic #ClassicalMusicLovers #OrchestralMusic #MusicHistory #ClassicalComposer #SovietMusic #Leningrad #DmitriShostakovich #MusicStory #ClassicalMusicTok #KamiClassic
Leonard Bernstein & the New York Philharmonic thanking composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who was in the audience, from the stage of the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow (1959). They performed the first movement of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, prepared especially for this televised concert. The one-hour program was built around a musical dialogue between Russia and America. Bernstein spoke to the audience about the two musical traditions, with Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite representing the American side. The Shostakovich was the second half of the program, but there was an unfortunate technical failure with the camera crew, so the Copland performance was never filmed. The performance took place on September 11, 1959, and the CBS broadcast aired on October 25. Despite plans for another filmed performance of the Leningrad Symphony years later, this remains the only known video of Bernstein conducting Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony.
