We brought Stravinsky’s energy with us on stage for Rite of Spring (literally)!
Our Principal Contrabassoon Jim Rodgers has a score signed by the composer himself, that his father-in-law purchased back in the 1950s.

Happy Birthday, Igor Stravinsky! 🎂🎶
As we celebrate the legendary Russian composer, born on this day in 1882, we're looking back through the archives at this historic performance of The Firebird, with Stravinsky himself leading the Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in 1965. ✨🎻
Fun fact: Stravinsky wasn't the first choice to compose The Firebird for the Ballets Russes. After several composers turned the project down, Sergei Diaghilev turned to the young Stravinsky. The ballet became his breakthrough success and launched one of the most influential musical careers of the 20th century.

🎶 I. STRAVINSKY Petrushka — Three Movements for Piano, I. Russian Dance
📍 November 6, 2023 @thehouseconcert
‼️ This is just a short segment, the full recording can be found on YouTube!
📚 Igor Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka, originally composed for orchestra in 1911 and arranged for solo piano in 1921, was created from music for his celebrated ballet Petrushka. The first movement, Russian Dance, captures the lively atmosphere of a Russian festival as Petrushka, the Ballerina, and the Moor are brought to life as puppets and begin to dance. Stravinsky transforms the orchestral scene into an extraordinarily virtuosic piano work, using sharp rhythms, bitonality, pounding chords, and rapidly shifting accents to create a vivid and almost mechanical energy. Technically, the movement is exceptionally demanding, requiring enormous rhythmic precision, powerful repeated chords, rapid octave writing, wide leaps, and highly controlled articulation, particularly in its famous opening passages. Overall, Russian Dance is a brilliant example of Stravinsky’s revolutionary approach to the piano, combining the raw energy of Russian folk-inspired music with striking harmonic dissonance and unprecedented pianistic difficulty.
