Greg Brooks Jr. grew up in Arkansas with a simple dream — play football at the highest level. From a young age, he was the kid who stayed late after practice, who chose discipline over shortcuts, who earned everything the hard way. That work ethic carried him to LSU, where he became more than just a player — he became a leader and team captain, respected for his heart as much as his talent. Then in 2023, life took a turn no one saw coming. What started as headaches and dizziness turned into a devastating diagnosis: a brain tumor. Emergency surgery saved his life, but it also changed it forever. The game he loved was suddenly replaced with hospital rooms, rehab sessions, and learning how to move forward in a completely different way. His story is heartbreaking — but it’s also incredibly heartwarming. Greg’s journey is emotional, inspiring, and deeply human. It reminds us that strength isn’t always about winning on the field. When I was much younger, my mom used to tell me many stories about her life in Korea. She was born immediately after the Korean War paused. She is the youngest of 5 kids and she's much younger than all of her siblings. She thought she wanted to marry this boy in her class because his parents owned a candy shop. She was also an athlete, a team captain, served as both Class President and VP (in different years), and represented her school often. She was busy. Every now and then, she'd mention her friend who carried her through much of it. For years, we had a hand embroidered image of a woman hanging above the toilet. She told me that it was a school assignment, but she couldn't finish it because she had to go to Japan for a competition so her friend finished it and submitted it for her. At their graduation, her friend gave it back as a gift. This story is about that friend, the one who helped my mom out whenever she needed it. She's a friend who spent decades trying to find my mom and finally found her after a chance meeting with my mom's niece, who also was in their class at school. I remember my mom telling me about getting a call at 9 pm and how she normally doesn't answer the phone that late, but that was the first time she got to hear her friend's voice since they were in their 20s. Her daughter is a writer and she wrote a short story that won an award last year. When my mom looked it up, she was surprised to learn that the title is her name. It's clear that both of us heard the many stories about our moms' friendship. As for that embroidered piece? My mom took it down. She said her friend saw it hanging over the toilet and asked her why she chose that spot. My mom said she got nervous and answered, "I visit this room a lot." She was pretty embarrassed by her answer. So when my dad repainted the bathroom, she decided that it shouldn't be above the toilet anymore.
