The world needs this energy back Before “Breathe” was even officially released, The Prodigy were already tearing through it live at Phoenix Festival 1996. Performing right before David Bowie, the band captured the full force of the ‘90s rave era, with Keith Flint, Maxim, and Liam Howlett turning the Main Stage into pure electronic punk chaos. Moments like this are why The Prodigy became one of the most influential live acts in dance music history.
🔥 I’m the trouble starter… 🔥 25+ years later and Firestarter by The Prodigy still hits like a riot in your speakers. Industrial chaos, punk attitude, and rave energy — Keith Flint’s snarl made this more than a track. It was a statement. It is a legacy. Rest in power, Keith 90s were never the same What’s your favorite Prodigy track? #TheProdigy #Firestarter #KeithFlint #90sRave #BigBeat #ElectroPunk #LegendsNeverDie #ElectronicMusic #RaveCulture #alternative
The Prodigy’s 1996 Phoenix Festival performance captures the band right before The Fat of the Land turned them into an international phenomenon. Playing the Main Stage at Long Marston Airfield on July 18, they tore through “Voodoo People,” “Breathe,” “Poison,” “Their Law,” “Firestarter,” “Mindfields” and “No Good,” with David Bowie taking the stage after them. What makes the footage so incredible is the sheer physicality of The Prodigy at this point. Keith Flint and Maxim weren’t simply fronting an electronic act—they were treating rave music like a punk or metal performance, with the crowd getting absolutely battered by Liam Howlett’s beats and samples. “Firestarter” was still brand new, having only been released a few months earlier, so watching them unleash it at Phoenix gives you a snapshot of the exact moment The Prodigy were crossing from underground rave culture into something enormous. #theprodigy #phoenixfestival #firestarter #keithflint #rave

Prodigy - Breathe live in Istanbul!

The Prodigy - Smack My B!tch Up live in Istanbul 2026 Bu Ağustos gecesi alev aldı arkadaş! @theprodigyofficial @maximrealityofficial @theoffplanguy @realrobholliday #theprodigy #prodigy #theprodigylive #keithflint #theprodigyofficial
The Prodigy didn‘t become icons by accident. They became icons by chaos. 1996. Liam Howlett had just finished an instrumental track. He played it for Keith Flint, who was usually just a dancer. Keith listened. Then he said: “I want to try vocals on that.” Howlett was shocked. Keith had never sung on a Prodigy track before. But he went into the booth... and “Firestarter” was born. Howlett later admitted: “I’d have been happy with a good sample, but Keith said, I’d really like to try some vocals on that’. And I’m like, ‘Whaaaaaaat?!’” But here‘s where it gets insane. The band spent £100,000 on the first music video. They hired a director. Built a set. Keith wore a straitjacket. When they saw the final cut, they hated it. Liam Howlett said: “It was just nonsense. I just put it in the bin.” They had almost no money left. They called director Walter Stern. Shot the new video in an abandoned, dust-filled London Underground tunnel — the Aldwych branch, closed to the public. Howlett recalled the band “whingeing [they were] gonna get asbestos poisoning.” They couldn’t afford colour. So they shot it in black and white. Keith Flint bought his now-iconic stars-and-stripes jumper that morning. At Camden Market. For £5. He said: “I liked the contradiction of us being this British band and wearing the stars and stripes jumper. Nothing‘s trying too hard.” The video shoot lasted over 12 hours in that toxic tunnel. Keith performed relentlessly. After the cameras stopped rolling, he threw up. “Firestarter” became The Prodigy‘s first UK number one. It stayed there for three weeks. It launched them into global superstardom. The track samples The Breeders’ “S.O.S.” (the wah-wah guitar riff), Art of Noise‘s “Close (To The Edit)” (the “hey!”), and a drum loop from Ten City‘s “Devotion”. One jumper. One toxic tunnel. One dancer who decided to sing. And a video that nearly killed its star. Some icons are built on polish and perfection. The Prodigy were built on chaos, cheap jumpers, and asbestos. What‘s your first memory of hearing “Firestarter”?
Thirty Years of Breathe 👽 Landgraaf, 27 May 1996. Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine on the same weekend lineup, a field in Limburg, and The Prodigy run a track with no catalogue number and no sleeve. The field rises up as though it has known the record for years. “Breathe” wouldn’t be released for another six months. It had lived that way for quite some time, carried through the set as an instrumental while rooms moved to it regardless. The first airing traces back to Belgrade, December 1995. Maxim has described what he and Keith eventually built on top as a standoff, aggression exchanged without contact, and maintains no camera has caught what it does in a room. The construction is stranger than the finished record admits. The two-bar figure that opens it is Jim Davies on guitar, played into Howlett’s sampler and filtered until the instrument stops being identifiable. The break is Thin Lizzy, “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed,” 1976. The whipcrack threaded through the arrangement comes off Wu-Tang’s “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’,” which took it from a 1981 Shaolin picture. A sword swung in Hong Kong cinema reached a rave record by way of Staten Island. It entered the UK chart at number one that November and moved close to 977,000 copies, outselling “Firestarter” and standing today as the band’s biggest single. Thirteen months after Landgraaf they took the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, the first electronic act handed the slot. The question of whether a dance act could carry a main stage stopped being asked. Name the record since that has left the same impact. @theprodigyofficial Footage: @pinkpopfest #theprodigy #pinkpop #keithflint #ravehistory
