The Truth About Toxic Productivity
Ever feel guilty for not being productive? That constant urge to always be doing something is what’s known as toxic productivity.
Two realisations helped me break free from this. First, in The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, one of the biggest regrets was wishing they hadn’t worked so hard. Second, our to-do lists are endless, so instead of feeling like I should have done more, I choose to feel satisfied with what I did do.
If this resonates, 4,000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman and Meditations for Mortals are great reads on letting go of the productivity trap.
If your nervous system feels dysregulated - it’s not because you’re doing life wrong, it's because your pace might be unrealistic.
I went on the NBC News Daily @nbcnews to talk about stress management and being intentional with Vicky Nguyen @vickynguyentv and Morgan Radford @morgankradford 💞
We talked about staying grounded in healthy productivity, and I shared practical tools like building a dopamine menu so people can reach for regulation, not just more 'being busy'.
It was an amazing milestone in the journey of my book - Toxic Productivity: taking something that started as a personal and clinical question, and seeing it land on a national stage where it might genuinely help someone breathe a little easier, reset their expectations, and choose a softer, more sustainable way to move through life.
Thank you Sarah Hall PR @sarahhallprinc @haileyhelms for setting this one up and Nikhil @nikhil.saboo for filming this video!
Forever grateful because I get to share my passion and insights about mental wellness with the world 💞

Discipline or Toxic Productivity?
If you enjoy working 7 days - Do it!
If you enjoy keeping work to 9-5 Mon-Fri, that's your choice.
Some people are wired to hustle longer,
Some people don't even want to go an extra mile.
You choose what's best for you!

5 ways to deal with toxic productivity⬇️
q: Are you having many deadlines at the moment?
a: No, I’m not🎉
Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed and burned out from trying to keep up with the demands of schoolwork? If so, you might be experiencing toxic productivity in your studies. But don’t worry, here are five student-friendly tips to help you break the cycle and find balance👇🏻
1. Set clear study goals. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure to do more, but setting specific study goals can help you focus on what’s important and avoid overwhelm. Write down what you want to achieve and break it down into smaller, manageable tasks.
2. Prioritize rest. Rest is just as important as studying, and neglecting it can lead to burnout. Build breaks into your study schedule and give yourself permission to take time off when you need it. Your brain will thank you!
3. Practice self-compassion. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t meet your study goals or if you make mistakes. Be kind and compassionate to yourself, and remember that perfection isn’t the goal.
4. Avoid multitasking. Trying to do too many things at once can actually decrease your productivity and increase stress. Instead, focus on one task at a time and give it your full attention.
5. Connect with others. Studying can be isolating, but connecting with others can help you feel supported and motivated. Join a study group or reach out to classmates to discuss course material and share tips.
Remember, finding balance in your studies is key to achieving your goals and avoiding burnout.

So here's the truth — I work 3-4 hours a day. Somedays, a bit more. Many days, a lot less.
Do I make as much money as people with my educational background and work experience? Not even close. But do I make enough money for my expenses, my desires, and my savings? Absolutely. Do I feel a sense of abundance and prosperity? Every single day.
Mr Narayan Murthy and Mr Bhavish Agarwal — maybe you live your best life when you work 70 hours a week. But please stop projecting your personal preference as some kind of virtue. Not all of us want to sacrifice our well-being at the altar of hyper-productivity.
Some of us have different dreams. Small, weird, queer, neurodivergent dreams. Dreams that prioritise a life well-lived over toxic productivity.
And just because our dreams won't make us billionaires — doesn't make them any less valid 💜✨

Sometimes, I struggle with toxic productivity. My comfort zone is having a billion things to do with no time to do them, which gives me the perfect excuse to neglect doing the things that will ACTUALLY help move me forward…
Healthy productivity - which I have more and more of in my life - is accomplishing your true priority tasks and then some instead of everything all at once.
I hope you let this video be a reminder that things can feel easy and magical and you can still be productive 🤍 You don’t HAVE to feel nauseated from the amount of work you have on the daily hahaha

Here’s a little spark of inspiration incase you were looking for it🫶🏼🤍
If you had that one hobby that you really really enjoyed in your younger days, something that has taken a backseat because adulting came in the way.. then here’s your sign to reignite it in the coming weekends.
This video is not to promote toxic productivity. It is not about sacrificing your time during weekends with friends, family and time with yourself to work extra. It’s about doing things that make you feel content.
I also understand that this lifestyle is not for everybody. So, please don’t feel pressured into saying a yes.
Having said that, I’m not going to shy away from the fact that I thoroughly enjoy every bit of content creation along with my full time job as a doctor.
But at the same time, I am not going to lie - some days it is really really difficult. Sometimes I do miss out on a few things/plans/revision time. But no one has forced me to choose one over the other. I chose this life because this is what brings me joy and peace. I like having a completely different life outside of hospital.
So, if there are people out there telling you(which is what they did to me as well), to let your hobby/side passion take a backseat as your academic career takes precedence then here’s your sign to NOT do that. If something genuinely brings you joy, no matter how little or how big, PURSUE IT. ✨

I love time blocking out my calendar to keep me on schedule!
WHAT IS TIME BLOCKING?
This is where you divide up your day into chunks of time. Then you allocate different tasks to these blocks.
WHY IS IT USEFUL?
It’s a lot easier to procrastinate when you don’t have anything you clearly need to be doing at that moment. When I used to set tasks in a to-do list for my day I would constantly be putting them off til later. As you won’t have to constantly make choices about what to do, it’s easier to focus. This isn’t toxic productivity either as the time block is not just about scheduling lots of work. I block out my morning routine, breaks etc. This way I have more structured procrastination (at least that’s what i call it haha) so I know I will get all my work done whilst also incorporating healthy habits into my day.
HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS?
I use my apple calendar! I set different categories of work to a different colour so I can clearly see what type of task I’ll be doing. E.g. I have a colour for my morning & evening routine, working out, school, my part time job.

So many people today carry Productivity Guilt mindset which makes them feel bad about themselves for
🔎not working hard enough
🔎not being able to achieve 100% of thier goals (especially career goals)
🔎 feeling guilty for the unfinished work
The guilt leads to intrusive thoughts like “I am not good enough” or feeling inadequate.
This pattern turns into toxic productivity where one may fill thier time with work activities at the expense of thier physical and mental health.
Being aware about it and willingness to do something about it is the first step ✌️

➡️ It’s a dicey time, but a lot of you are getting reaaaaaally bent… again. ✨You don’t “need to” be doing anything career-wise right now other than getting thru the day✨This is the SECOND time in THREE years that we’re in a situation that many of us have never gone thru before… OF COURSE you don’t know how to handle it. But spinning yourself out and making yourself feel worse than you already do for not keeping busy is NOT IT - toxic productivity is never gonna be the answer 🚩🙅🏼♀️ So take a breath and do whatever’s gonna help you thru the next 10 minutes. Cool? See you out there! 🙋🏼♀️💛💪🏻
