How to not be a selfish jerk at trail magic!!!
Trail magic is so amazing! And it’s a privilege, not a right. When you’re lucky enough to get trail magic:
✨Leave it better than you found it
✨Don’t take any for the road unless given explicit permission
✨Not required, but donate if you can through cash or something like helping clean up
✨Try to connect with your trail angel! They are not doing this to be treated like a door mat!
✨And seriously, remember to say please and thank you

Wait until you see where I’m hiking next…
Hi! I’m the face behind Hike55up - Rebecca.
I’m a hiking-loving woman who believes adventure doesn’t stop as we age - it gets better. I hike wherever I go, because for me, travel and hiking always go hand in hand. From coastal trails to mountain views, you’ll usually find me exploring up and down the Pacific side—California, Oregon, and beyond—chasing fresh air, waterfalls, wildflowers, and that feeling you only get on the trail.
And guess what… this summer I’ll be exploring a lot in Northern California and some in Washington and Idaho, so new hikes, new views, and new trail stories are coming!
If you love hiking as you age, want motivation to get moving, or you’re looking for trail inspiration and outdoor adventure ideas—welcome. You’re in the right place.
See the trail. Feel Confident. Keep going.
The #1 question I get about thru hiking the AT is,"did you go alone!?"
Yes. I did go alone! If I waited for someone who wanted to go with me I'd still be waiting to go. Or I'd have forced someone to go with me and felt guilty when they had a rough day. Or gone with a stranger who I might not have enjoyed being around. So yes, I went alone.
I met folks early on, who I grew apart from and was alone again. I did most of the trail alone, sharing my time with my thoughts, my music, the moss, the bears. It was both beautiful and hard. But I wanted to do this so I continued to do it alone.
And then, the trail brought me to my people. The people I continued to run into, who were intrigued by the same adventure and immersed in the same community I was, became my people. So much love to the people who became embedded in my heart along the trail: @tolbertstakethetrail, @havenwanders, @anna.ratterson, @andapeaceofpaige, @rhymes_with_calzone, and of course @johnblondbland who understood my need to go alone.
If you have a dream, an adventure you want to chase, and no one wants to go, go alone! The people with the same dream will be there and thats a great basis for new friendship! And, if it sucks, do something else alone! 😊

One of the top comments that I got this year was that I needed to “slow down”. Or I was going “too fast”.
Apparently, I was missing all of the views, wildlife, and other incredible things that you experience in nature.
What a lot of people didn’t understand was that while I was hiking far every single day, I wasn’t necessarily hiking fast.
I took the time to enjoy the views on top of every high point and mountain.
Hiking longer days actually meant that I saw more than most people typically do.
I watched every sunrise and sunset.
I experienced sections of trail and conditions that most people never will, such as deep snow and extreme solitude.
Averaging 27.5 miles a day for an entire year isn’t for everyone.
But I don’t feel as though I missed out on anything that nature had to offer me.
I actually think I saw a whole lot on trail in 2025.

It actually isn’t.
Quite the opposite - there are more challenges than rainbows and sunshine. But the beauty and the good days always outweighed the hard ones…
and I’d choose it all over again.

I mean, it is a beauty hike!! 🥾 ⛰️
Have you come across anything like this before on the trails?
I really love this day to night shot ☺️
Somehow the first post was totally frozen after a while so here we go again.
1. This came up in a recent story. I don’t really know how to nicely say that the majority of people don’t want to hear other people’s music on the trails. This is especially true in crowded locations and includes trails in the middle of the city (like Palmer Park/Ute Valley/Garden of the Gods/Red Rocks/ Pulpit Rock). Wow we’re blessed. Also the Incline. This is especially true on the Incline. Often you will be near the same people for the whole climb. Don’t make them listen to it for over an hour!
2. This seems obvious, but it really is important to keep the mountains beautiful for everyone else. This is another one that the Manitou Incline kind of brings to light. People often leave their orange peels etc. this may seem fine, but I’d be grateful if you didn’t do it. I didn’t really realize when I was new to hiking, but without regulars often picking up trash places like the Incline would look horrific. I’ve since done a lot more to keep it that way. Leave no trace!
3. These have focused on the trail experience for others, and this does too. By planning your hikes with the right gear (more than water), you help avoid needing people to assist you! By bringing hydration, you’ll be able to enjoy the hike and lower your risk of adverse effects to altitude especially when visiting from out of state.
So basically, thank you for being courteous to house around you and enjoy the trails.
I hope to see you out there!
