SEND parents!? What happens if a trustee on your special needs trust dies?? Well, to start with..you need more than one. Because, if you only appoint one trustee and they die, lose capacity, or step down, the trust can be left unable to operate until a replacement is formally appointed. Nightmare delays at exactly the wrong time. Having more than one trustee means: 🧡continuity if something happens 🧡decisions can still be made 🧡the trust doesn’t grind to a halt (leaving your yp without funds!) It’s also important to know that trustees usually have to agree. That’s a safeguard in itself, but it does mean trustee choice really matters. What if just one dies and one is left? Let's say you have two trustees and one dies - the remaining usually then has the 'power to appoint' new trustees. That's another built-in safeguard. 🌟 I included my choice of follow-on trustees in my Letter of Wishes. Edit: Arthur’s wife’s name was Margaret Homer Nichols Shurcliff, not Rose Nichols Shurcliff. Today we celebrate the birthday of visionary landscape architect Arthur Asahel Shurcliff (1870-1957), who designed many of the iconic garden and landscape features at Castle Hill, including the Grand Allée. Born Arthur Shurtleff, he changed his name to Shurcliff in 1930 to conform to its ancient spelling. Shurcliff was an MIT-trained engineer and landscape architect who was mentored by Trustees’ founder Charles Eliot and worked for the Olmsted firm in Brookline. In 1899, together with Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., he founded the first four-year landscape architecture course in the country at Harvard. In 1904, he opened his own landscape practice in Boston. Arthur Shurcliff’s work included town/urban planning, public projects, college campuses, and the restoration of early American town commons, as well as private residential projects. However, he is perhaps best known as the chief landscape architect for the restoration and recreation of Colonial Williamsburg from 1928-1941, stemming from his deep knowledge of the history and design of colonial landscapes. A summer neighbor of the Cranes, Shurcliff’s work at Castle Hill included the Rose Garden (1913-14), the Mall/Allée (1913-1915), the Vegetable Garden (1917) and its towers (1919), and supervising the installation of the maze (1920, no longer extant). These picturesque landscape features continue to attract thousands of visitors to Castle Hill each year and provide a beautiful backdrop to their memories. Their eldest, Sidney, was a lifelong friend of Cornelius Crane who served as trip photographer on the Crane Pacific Expedition of 1928-1929. We’re saying a very fond farewell to ArtCan Co-Chair Deborah Henry-Pollard @fireworksdhp who has been part of our organisation for many years. Debs has been an incredible support to our artists, our Founder and Director, the team of Trustees and to our organisation as a whole. Alongside her wise direction and generous contribution to our membership schemes, plus introducing Rich and our wonderful fundraising Trustee Georgia to ArtCan, Debs also introduced us to the brilliant Tom at TD360 and made our virtual gallery possible exactly when we needed it the most. We are all very grateful to Debs for her time, patience and vision for ArtCan, and she will be very much missed, but leaves us for an exciting new chapter and we wish her all the best! Co-Chair Rich Nicholls says: “I want to give huge thanks to Debs as she steps down as Co-Chair.. She’s been such a wise, warm, and constant presence at ArtCan during my time on the board.
