Learn more about the Search For Excellence First Place winners @ucmastergardenersoc and the amazing volunteers behind this project!! #ucmastergardeners #ucanr #orangecounty #hydroponics Video credit: Caroline Champlin @ucanr Video description: Sally Richards and Alvin Lam, UC Master Gardeners of Orange County, demonstrate hydroponic gardening at an outdoor community garden. Sally, wearing glasses and a white shirt, rolls a bucket of leafy greens along a garden path while a nearby table displays a hydroponic setup. She and Alvin, in a navy polo shirt, introduce themselves and explain how they combined their skills in indoor growing and hydroponics. Standing beside a large garden planter, they share their goal of making hydroponic gardening simple and affordable for people without access to soil. A close-up time-lapse shows roots developing in water, alongside views of a tabletop system with young plants. A box of freshly harvested greens highlights their results. The video ends with both standing by a table of vegetables, encouraging others to try gardening and share their passion.
California’s vernal pools offer a unique habitat for all kinds of aquatic invertebrates and specialized flower species. They go through three distinct phases: wet, flower, and dry. David Rosen of @sacsplash took me out to see the pools back in the wet phase in February, and it was pure magic! I turned this outing into an episode of Golden State Naturalist, which you can find wherever you get your podcasts! You can also follow the link in my bio to find ways to listen. Have you ever been to a vernal pool? Storing jars without the rings makes people nervous, but a properly sealed jar doesn’t need a ring to hold it in place. In fact, the ring can hide a false seal, so removing the rings is an important safety step to ensure you’re feeding your family the best you have to offer. #safecanning #foodsafety #canningseason #ucmasterfoodpreservers #ucanr
Using a flame weeder to control Italian Ryegrass! Since we have started no-till, one of the big issues is ryegrass, and it appears to be tolerant/resistant to most of our herbicides! Fingers crossed for flame weeding! #californiarice #ucanr #californiaagriculture #ucce #ucanr #rice #buttecounty
We're celebrating the incredible efforts of young naturalists across California! 🌿 Through hands-on learning and community engagement, they're leading the way in environmental stewardship. Join us in honoring their commitment to our planet. ARC has certified over 100 @californiaconservationcorps members, aged 19-25 since 2022. The project was part of the Youth Community Access Grant Program, funded by the state’s Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act (Proposition 64). Sorghum takes center stage at Kearney REC! At a recent bake-off, UC Cooperative Extension Specialist Jackie Atim showcased how this ancient, nutrient-dense and gluten-free grain can be swapped in for wheat, corn, or other water-intensive grains. 🌾💧 Bake-off winners: First place: Miranda Moyo – Sorghum Peach Cobbler Second place: Jeffrey Mitchell, Ph.D. – Sorghum Tabbouleh Salad Third place: Kross Savas – Sorghum Chocolate Nut Cookies @frenso_state Sorghum is high in iron, packed with antioxidants, naturally drought-tolerant, and globally grown — yet still rare in U.S. grocery aisles. This event proved a delicious, sustainable option ready for more kitchens.
