Part 1/2 My relatives! Colonial govt @bcndp #Canada gave us a trespass notice for building a home in our ancient village of Nusq’lst! They go so far as to cite archaeological evidence that it is a BC heritage site (OUR people and OUR graves) We have never ceded our lands and are rebuilding our village! We are protecting our river and access to fishing, our graves, and our village itself which is thousands of years old and being sold off while we are being kicked out of our house. Political tensions are boiling over in British Columbia after Independent MLA Tara Armstrong accused the NDP of promoting “blood and soil nationalism” in relation to Indigenous policy and the implementation of UNDRIP. The phrase carries deeply controversial historical connotations, prompting a swift and forceful response from Premier David Eby, who condemned the remark and said no one should be allowed to use “Nazi rhetoric” in the BC Legislature. He also called on all parties to immediately denounce the comment. The exchange, which unfolded April 23 is already sparking intense debate across the province and raising serious questions about the tone and boundaries of political discourse inside B.C.’s legislature. #BCPolitics #BritishColumbia #UNDRIP #DavidEby #soniawest
Can a First Nation legally block helicopters from flying over Crown land? A Gitxsan Nation group in northern B.C. attempted to restrict helicopter flights over territory they claim under Aboriginal title. Transport Canada has now responded with a clear ruling. Canada has exclusive control over national airspace, even over disputed Indigenous land. This case is shaping up to be a major test of how far Aboriginal title can extend. Indigenous leaders cite UNDRIP and the principle of free, prior, and informed consent. Federal law, however, states that aviation falls under national safety jurisdiction with no exceptions. Why this matters: ✅ Aviation companies now have legal clarity ✅ Resource developers face growing uncertainty around title claims ✅ Emergency services cannot be delayed by consent negotiations ✅ First Nations’ authority over airspace remains legally limited The bigger question is this. Should Aboriginal title extend beyond the land into the sky? Or should federal authority remain absolute for safety and national governance? "What economic benefits could come from implementing #UNDRIP in the forestry context?" With fear-based rhetoric about BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (Declaration Act) on the rise, we continue to set the record straight in our blog series on the Declaration Act and the economy. This time we spoke with professional forester Garry Merkel (nadi’ denezā), Director of the Centre of Indigenous Land Stewardship at UBC @ubcforestry, about what upholding #IndigenousRights means for forestry in BC. 🔗 Check out the full interview at the link in our bio. #dripa #environmentallaw #bcforestry #reconciliation #gitxaala #bcpoli

All provincial legislation in B.C. must pass through UNDRIP. Under B.C. Interpretation Act, s. 8(1), every law in the province must be interpreted and applied in a manner consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This legal requirement shapes how courts and the government make decisions on land, resources, and Indigenous rights, impacting communities, businesses, and local governments across B.C. #BCPolitics #UNDRIP #IndigenousRights #BCLaw #LandClaims

UNEA-7 has failed Indigenous Peoples, and therefore the planet. The removal of all text on Indigenous Peoples and our rights, knowledge systems, sciences, and solutions is absolutely unacceptable and jeopardises effective environmental decision-making. Member States and @unep must uphold their obligations to uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples as affirmed under UNDRIP. Anything less is regressive and condemns our children to an unsurvivable future. Find out more @ipmg.unep and @aippnet #UNEA7 #UNEP #UNDRIP
🛑 “This is not prosperity. This is modern colonization.” Kehewin Cree Nation Chief Vernon Watchmaker takes a bold stand against Bill C-5, calling out the federal government for centralizing power in Ottawa and ignoring Indigenous treaty rights. He warns that without Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) — a right under UNDRIP — this bill undermines First Nations' sovereignty and continues Canada’s colonial legacy. Referencing the Royal Proclamation of 1763, he reminds us: land rights aren't new — they’ve just been ignored. 📢 It’s not just policy. It’s about respect, sovereignty, and the truth. 💬 What you can do: – Watch. – Share. – Speak up. 👇 Drop your thoughts in the comments. " We owe survivors more than words. we owe them action.
