Taking a break from the more serious posts for a bit of a giggle. I remember being made to take extremely limited portions of food throughout the week and still worrying about whether we would all have enough to eat on leftover day. I remember noticing that there was no security camera/monitoring system, no phone that we could easily access in case of emergencies. I remember spending hours on my hands and knees with a rag (sometimes a toothbrush) to scrub the floors because we didn’t have a mop. I remember refusing to drink the water because of how dirty it was and after about a month of constipation caused by dehydration, I was finally taken seriously - at least seriously enough so that I could keep hiking. The therapist notes read, “Complained about stomachache, feet being cold - received medical attention. Said she was unappreciated, but that didn’t make any sense. Holding the group back but wants group to pity her. Tears, feeling sorry for herself. Waits to complete chores until the end. 1 week from now, it will be 8 years since I was dropped off in the SLC airport with two transporters from Second Nature Wilderness Therapy Uintas. Over the next 89 days, all I could think about was if the ones I loved and missed even knew where I was, and when/IF I would ever get to go home. It didn’t end there. Another 16 1/2 months would go by in a residential treatment center, Eva Carlston Academy (also in Utah). Now, I try to share my experiences in these programs in hopes to let parents and families know the reality behind it all. Some estimates say that around 120,000 children are held in congregate care facilities (like wilderness, RTCs, boot camps, foster homes, etc) at any given point. Yet, there is currently NO federal regulation and very little oversight. What more tragedies and losses must occur for people to listen to survivors and implement change? today is the five year anniversary of me leaving the residential i went to after wilderness. i know im mostly known for making videos about wilderness, but i only spent 3 months there versus the 6 i spent in residential. and although there was heating and showers and clean food in residential, although all my basic needs were cared for, it was worse. it did much more damage to me psychologically than wilderness ever did. it took much longer to unlearn the brainwashing. i’m still unlearning it. all of my physical needs were taken care of more than wilderness and it was still worse. i’ve found that it’s hard for people to understand that, if they haven’t been through it themselves. anniversaries are weird. sometimes they pass by and you don’t feel any different. sometimes the day arrives and you feel like you’re crashing to the ground and drowning in memories you’d do anything not to have. today is the second kind. i usually make a video on the anniversaries. i can’t today. i have so many trauma anniversaries, i feel like almost every month is “cursed” for me, in one way or another. i remind myself that i also have so many good memories already, and so many in my future. i am incredibly blessed to have the life i do now. and i still mourn the life i had before. i still mourn what was lost. #tti #troubledteenindustry #breakingcodesilence #unsilenced #iseeyousurvivor #iseeyousurvivors #kids #teen #teens #troubledteen #troubledteenindustrysurvivor#anxiety #anxietyrelief #anxietyawareness #depression #depressionhelp #depressionawareness #ptsd #ptsdrecovery #ptsdawareness #mentalhealth #mentalillness #trauma #traumasurvivor #traumahealing #psychology #childpsychology #cult #healing #healingjourney
