I loaded my @vego_garden raised beds full of tulips and if it plays out next spring the way I imagine it, the veg garden should be lovely. Letâs see how the veg garden in the poly tunnel is coming on .
I managed to convince my mum to let me set up a veg garden for her, and filmed the whole thing.
With the metal beds, arch and compost it cost around ÂŁ350
Links for the beds and arch are in my bio.

I lost nearly £100 worth of dahlias last year⌠and it was entirely my fault.
I left them sitting wet. Dahlias are Mexican in origin and they really hate cold, soggy conditions which, as we know, the UK does rather well in winter.
I meant to lift them, but life got in the way, and by the time I remembered they had rotted away.
So if youâre lifting dahlias, keep it simple. lift them, let the soil dry out completely, knock it off, and store the tubers somewhere dry and frost-free.
A bit of antifungal powder and some paper wrapping helps too.
Itâs a little bit of effort⌠but losing ÂŁ40âÂŁ100 worth of dahlias is also quite a lot.
And when dahlias work, theyâre incredible. huge blooms, beautiful in vases, lovely in borders, even tucked into the veg garden.
So if youâve lost yours before donât worry. Weâre all learning as gardeners. I certainly am. đ¸

One of my New Yearâs resolutions was to stop losing my tools so often. đ
This week?
I only lost my hori hori five times.â¨
One was in the veg garden. đĽâ¨
One was in the greenhouse waiting to be cleanedâhence the reason I couldnât see it. đŤŁâ¨
And one mightâve been in my hand the whole time. đ
I think thatâs pretty good for the beginning of the gardening season.â¨
Havenât really had to use my Felco pruners yet⌠weâll see how often those walk off.
Itâs not really a favorite tool if you donât panic-lose it daily. đŠâđž

I had a bit of success in the summer with some summer greens - by which I mean they were quite decimated by some beasties but the netting did keep away some other little buggers and I loved seeing them in their wedding weeds in the middle of the veg garden and although, as I mentioned, they werenât whole when I finally got round to picking them I got 2 meals as an on the side and what deliciousness. So I have gone large with the winter brassicas - I have white sprouting broccoli, Russian kale, red Chinese cabbage and turnips, also castelfranco and frisee for all my winter salad needs. Oh and I got a few more artichokes as they were such a great part of the veg garden last summer, such a quick and simple thing to eat and they add structure and architecture to the veg beds and attract loads of happy insects to eat the naughty ones. I will be planting these guys out this week when the rain stops for long enough and canât wait to be able to show you what I harvest.

If youâve ever walked out to the garden and discovered your veggies have become an all-you-can-eat buffet, this oneâs for you.
These simple net hoops are one of the best things Iâve ever built for the veg garden and allotment. Theyâre sturdy, easy to lift on and off when I need to weed or harvest, and most importantly⌠they keep my brassicas where they belong.
Sometimes the simplest jobs make the biggest difference.
