Few directors handle memory and migration with as much restraint as Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting. Notable films include An Autumn's Tale and The Soong Sisters, where archival texture meets intimate performances.
Her frames linger — small gestures carry national histories.
Which of her films shaped your view of Hong Kong cinema? 🎥

WONG Kar-Wai is a renowned Hong Kong filmmaker, best known for his artistic romantic films. He has won the Hong Kong Film Awards multiple times and has been nominated four times for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He is also the first director of Chinese ethnicity to win the Best Director award at Cannes.
Wong is widely regarded as one of the finest filmmakers in the industry when it comes to storytelling through light and colour. His films consistently explore the many facets of love with remarkable subtlety, blending romance with a poetic sensibility. Although he has directed relatively few feature films, each one has become a classic.
In Wong's films, Hong Kong is portrayed as a fluid city imbued with nostalgia, detachment, and a dreamlike quality. This distinctive neon-lit atmosphere is often realised through the aesthetics of renowned cinematographer Christopher Doyle. Both Wong and Doyle favour settings such as narrow corridors, ageing buildings, and traditional cafés, creating a sense of confinement and loneliness while evoking a deep longing for the past.

Day 45/100: In the Mood for Love (2000)
Wong Kar-wai’s masterpiece didn’t just capture the hearts of Hong Kong; it redefined the “romance” genre for a global audience. Since its debut at Cannes, where Tony Leung became the first Hong Kong actor to win Best Actor, the film has consistently ranked as one of the greatest motion pictures ever made. Its depiction of longing and “the missed encounter” resonates across cultures, proving that the most powerful emotions are often the ones left unsaid.
Technically, the film is a masterclass in visual storytelling. Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bing’s cinematography uses tight framing and “cluttered” compositions to mirror the suffocating social pressures of 1960s Hong Kong. Maggie Cheung’s performance is equally legendary—she communicates a lifetime of grief and restraint through the slightest tilt of her head, all while navigating the iconic, high-collared qipao dresses that become their own character in the film.
Director Wong Kar-wai is famous for his improvisational style; he began filming without a finished script, and the production took over 15 months to complete because he kept refining the atmosphere and emotional beats.
• Roger Ebert: “A story about two people who find solace in their shared betrayal, told with a visual lushness that is almost overwhelming.”
• The Guardian: “A heartbreakingly beautiful exercise in restraint and one of the most romantic films of the modern era.”
• Rotten Tomatoes: “This understated romance features some of the most stunning visuals and evocative performances in cinema history.

If we had to sum up HK FILMART 2026 in one word? Unforgettable. 🎬💫
Walking through those doors, we had no idea just how much we were about to experience. We saw projects that blew our minds, stumbled upon ideas that challenged the way we think, and connected with some fascinating businesses from around the world.
There were laughs, there were lightbulb moments, there were conversations that ran way too long. And we loved every second of it.
This is what this industry is all about. Community, creativity, and the shared belief that storytelling has the power to change the world. We are so grateful to have been a part of it. 💙
