Bamboo fabric is often touted as a sustainable option, but most of it is actually viscose or rayon, which require toxic chemicals to produce. So how do you know what kind of bamboo is good? 1. Avoid anything just listed as "bamboo." It's almost certainly viscose or rayon. 2. Bamboo lyocell is a great option since it's produced with non-toxic solvents in a closed-loop system. 3. I also look for @oeko_tex certification since this means the finished product is free from substances harmful to human health. Note: I have also seen bamboo viscose that's closed-loop and OEKO-TEX certified, but it's way less common. Lyocell is inherently closed-loop so that tends to be a safer option. Okay let’s talk about it ⬇️ Thinking these things are non toxic is NOT the fault of moms - it’s the fault of horrible, deceptive industry marketing! And let me clear - you can absolutely add whatever you want to your registry, mama. Let me just clear up some misconceptions about these types of products for ya: Bamboo fabric is NOT non toxic. Bamboo fabric, often seen on labels as rayon or tencel, is a semi-synthetic fiber that requires very harsh and toxic chemical processing in order to turn it from the bamboo plant into fabric. (It’s also thin, pills easily, and isn’t designed to last). All these baby companies promoting their bamboo baby onesies as “non toxic” are just straight up greenwashing. The best fabric for babies is 100% cotton - organic cotton is best if it’s in your budget. And honestly there’s nothing non toxic about the Doona. It’s made with brominated flame retardants, didn’t pass most international safety testing, and encourages parents to keep babies in a bucket style seat beyond just car travel time, which is not ideal at all for babies’ developing spines and bodies. Instead, choose a car seat that is flame retardant free, and opt for baby carriers or bassinet-style strollers when little ones aren’t in the car for travel.
