Basil doesn’t have super sensitive roots like some garden plants do which just means you can separate those crowded nursery pots and plant them throughout your garden!
Most store bought basil has 10+ seedlings all packed into one tiny container.. If you leave them like that, they’ll compete for space, nutrients, and airflow..
Basil is pretty forgiving..
You might see a little droop for a day or two but they recover quickly!
This is one of the easiest ways to turn one basil plant into 5 or more 🌱
More plants. More harvest. More pesto!
Save this for planting day!!

🌿 Harvesting Basil Like a Pro! 🌿
Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow and harvest, but timing is key to getting the best flavor. When harvesting, always pinch or cut the stems just above a pair of leaves — this encourages the plant to branch out and grow fuller!
TIP: Don’t take more than 1/3 of the plant at a time to keep it healthy and productive.

Today we are back and I am showing you my journey over the last five years of growing and enjoying fresh basil at home, and the best part is you only need a few cheap plants from the supermarket to get started.
Basil is one of my all time favourite herbs, not just for its amazing culinary uses but also as a great companion plant in the garden too. However, unfortunately it is one plant that seems to cause gardeners quite a few issues to grow, but the good news is that’s often not your fault, and is easy to fix!
Most basil plants fail because of how they are grown and sold. For the most part you will buy basil in small pots of relatively poor compost, and in these pots you will see 30 or more small basil plants. Each basil plant can grow into its own bush if grown and pruned properly so we need to give them some love.
It all starts by gently separating small clusters of basil, and potting them on into larger pots filled with good quality compost. As a side note this is great as you get multiple plants from the one you bought.
Then over the spring and summer just keep them watered and in a sunny spot and you will notice they will be so much happier. As they grow instead of picking each leaf, keep harvesting the tips, which will cause the plant to bush out giving you a healthier plant, and more to harvest.
Basil is an annual plant so will die off at the end of each year, but you can take a few cuttings, which can be grown on a windowsill over winter and then planted back out the following spring to repeat the process again.
Thank you so much for watching, the last few weeks have been tough with everything going on and your support means the world,
I love you all,
Joe 😊🌱💚🙏

psa: give your basil as much sun as possible! 🍃 🌞
i thought i had spaced them out sufficiently but after our rapid growth over the last week (thanks @completegrow 😉), our basil gave us a great example of how the amount of sun it receives impacts its growth, size and flavour.
all four basils were planted at the exact same time, watered and fed together. the only difference is how much sun they each got!

POV: you thought basil was just… basil 🌿💅
Turns out she has options — sweet, spicy, lemony, and everything in between. Here’s your guide to choosing the right basil for your summer garden (and your pasta’s future).

Growing Basil From Seed 🌱
Want fresh basil at your fingertips? Let’s grow it from seed. Grab a module tray or small pot. Fill it with well draining soil as basil hates wet feet.
Drop two to three seeds in a quarter inch deep. I like to multisow basil seeds, but don’t overcrowd them. They need space to strut their stuff.
Lightly cover the seeds with some of your favourite potting mix and gently firm the soil down.
This helps with watering and germination.
Give it a gentle water. Think mist, not monsoon.
Place it somewhere sunny, like a windowsill. But make sure it’s also warm, as basil likes heat.
Patience pays off. In 5 to 10 days, you’ll see sprouts. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy during this time. About 6 8 weeks later, boom!
Fresh basil for your pasta, pesto, or just to flex your green thumb. Hit that follow for more gardening tips.

One year on, we thought we would reshare Farmer Luci’s tips on harvesting basil again. This will keep your basil plant happy, bushy and living its longest life – so you can keep it on the menu for as long as possible. 💚
Key tips…
1. Look under the top of the basil plant for the two new shoots, then pinch above to promote more growth
3. Don’t throw away the flowers – they are delicious fresh or even dry for cooking in the cooler months
4. When harvesting a big bunch, you can snip at the bottom of the plant, just leave some nodes for the plants to grow back
5. Basil plants are annual, so they will die off eventually – save the seed when dry!
These bunches of basil go to our grocery and Merri Cafe (just up the hill) and to @ceresfairfood. Sign up for our gardening newsletter for more seasonal tips and tricks! 💚

🌿 Pruning basil for more growth
When pruning basil, always look for two new sprouts below your cut — that’s how you encourage it to branch out and grow bushier instead of tall and leggy ✂️✨
We’ll need plenty of basil for our burrata tomato salads, so keeping it productive is a must 😋🍅
