I love reading — fiction and nonfiction — and I want us to crowdsource our connections to literature and books that have helped us root in our multicultural identities. There are many over the years and many more to read but…
For me, 8 books that come to mind (in no order) are:
1. EROTIC STORIES FOR PUNJABI WIDOWS by Balli Kaur Jaswal
2. THE NAMESAKE by Jhumpa Lahiri
3. WHY ARE ALL THE BLACK KIDS SITTING TOGETHER IN THE CAFETERIA by Beverly Daniel Tatum
4. THEY CALLED US EXCEPTIONAL by Prachi Gupta
5. I AM NOT YOUR PERFECT MEXICAN DAUGHTER by Erika Sanchez
6. WHAT MY BONES KNOW by Stephanie Foo
7. AMERICANAH by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
8. SEE NO STRANGER by Valarie Kaur
📣If you want to join a BOOK CLUB via Zoom that’s every other month for anyone straddling multiple cultural identities, comment NEWSLETTER to get a link and join the community. We read Hijab Butch Blues last month (amazing!!) and Our next meeting is in April to read Evil Eye by Etaf Rum.

Reading can be therapeutic for multiple reasons.
It strengthens your focus, improves perspective-taking and empathy, helps your brain better understand other people’s thoughts and emotions, and can even reduce stress.

What to Read Wednesdays?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This week’s book is The Power of Beliefs by Shawn Achor. This is a fascinating exploration of how the stories we tell ourselves shape the way we experience the world. Here are 3 powerful ideas from the book.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 - Belief changes performance. The way we think about challenges, stress and our own potential influences how we respond to them. Often it’s not the event itself that matters most but the meaning we attach to it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2 - We don’t experience reality directly. We experience our interpretation of reality. Two people can encounter the exact same situation and see completely different possibilities depending on the lens through which they’re viewing it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3 - Many of our beliefs are invisible. The assumptions we carry about ourselves, others and what’s possible often operate beneath our awareness. The moment we begin questioning them, new possibilities start to emerge.
This is a brilliant and thought provoking book about psychology, human potential and how changing the stories we tell ourselves can change the lives we live. A great read.
A few of favorite books about becoming more of yourself.
Change by Jeffery Kottler
The Choice by William Glasser M.D.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley
The Gift by Edith Eger
Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab (it's me😁😁)

Alice’s Summer Bibliotherapy pick is ‘The Missing Magic of Sparrow Xia’ by @leiaham
Perfect holiday reading for any Year 6s who, like Sparrow, are also about to transition to a new school…
@literapy_nyc Just finished The Incredibly Human Henson Blayze by Derrick Barnes, and wow… this one stays with you. 📚Thank you @authorderrickdbarnes @vikingbooks
@penguinkids for the #gifted copy ✨
At 13, Henson is a football phenom in his small Mississippi town. He is placed on a pedestal he never asked for and pressured to be the hometown hero. But when he speaks out against injustice, he quickly learns how fragile that “love” can be.
Derrick Barnes delivers a raw, moving story about racism, family, and the dangerous expectations placed on Black boys, balancing painful moments of police brutality with tender reflections on ancestry, love, and identity.
The ending? Powerful and affirming.
This story reminds us that every Black child deserves to be seen as fully human, loved, and lovable. This is a book about justice, self-worth, and healing that will deeply inspire readers of all ages.

*PART 4* 📚🎤 BIBLIOTHERAPY IS IN SESSION: because maybe healing was never about reinventing ourselves.
Maybe it was always about meeting the parts of us that learned to hide…..and finally giving them permission to come HOME.
To our voice.
To our creativity.
To our faith.
To our TRUTHIEST self.
😌🥹✨
Last night wasn’t just about getting on a stage.
It was about realizing that every time I choose FAITH over FEAR, I abandon myself a little less…..and come HOME to myself a little more.
And THAT is the kind of healing I want my inner child, my actual child + anyone watching to know is possible.
Not becoming someone new….but,
Remembering who you’ve been all along. 💁🏻♀️💃🏻
If only 🫶. We have lots of projects around the house this weekend and I won’t be able to spend any time in the library, so sharing these quiet moments makes me happy. Hope you lovelies have a wonderful and restful weekend 📖.
