Brice Marden: The Form of a Plane
I paint because I believe it's the best way that I can pass my time as a human being," Brice Marden reflected in 1976. He died in August 2023 after an extraordinary six-decade-long career. Throughout, he maintained a commitment to process and doubt over certainty and finish, and strove to synthesize image and plane. His subtle palette suggests a sensitivity to place that-in its translation of lived experience-transcends abstraction. His drawings and paintings are colored by, for example, the light of downtown Manhattan or the shadows of olive trees on the Greek island of Hydra. And his compositions, which range from rectilinear grids to looping networks of calligraphic lines, trace tempos alternately immediate and eternal.

“There are the rocks, Hydra rocks, the pines bending to the winds, echoing the bends the rocks have undergone for so many more years. Remember immersion—water—land—sky—the all.” – Brice Marden
In the early 1980s, Marden began painting in oils on small slabs of white marble found in local quarries in Hydra. This work, ‘Hydra View’ from 2012, is a result of a practice which the artist had been refining for over three decades. Sotheby’s specialist @aleksandra.zie shares more.
‘Hydra: The Karpidas Collection’ will take place at #SothebysParis on 30 and 31 October, and the exhibition is now open to the public in our Paris galleries until 30 October. Discover more in the link in bio.

How do I find Art dealers or collectors and connect with them?
-----+++++++------
They will find you.
First, you must put yourself and your art out into the world.
Collectors will come to you. Don’t go to them first.
Imagine going door to door trying to sell art, it wouldn’t work.
You would simply perish from starvation.
The advice I will give is the route I took. My goal has been to learn how to create, promote, and sell art. Each one of those things is its own dragon. You must learn each one, the whole business from top to bottom.
The sad truth is you have to do it by yourself to gain those essential skills until you can hand them off to a third party, such as a gallery or an agent.
When you master each thing, that’s when you will have the fishing pole instead of the fish.
You are like a magnet, you can attract the things that you need if you put in the work first.
Curators, Designers, and Galleries don’t want to work with an amateur, they have plenty of options and there is money to be made. Once you gain an understanding of your craft, networking and building connections will become second nature.
Know all aspects of your art business.
Your digital presence and reputation is vital.
You must have a converting sales funnel.
And on top of that, you need to create art.
Do all those things and the art world will love you. This is the hard way, but the good news is you will have a well-rounded and lasting business if you do it correctly.
Also….
You can find anyone in any field on LinkedIn. I’ve been connecting with interior designers there
Over now video little information
An art gallery I always visit when I'm in NYC. You can always see moving pieces. I always go back. If you haven't been, don't miss it. had the opportunity to visit the Gagosian art gallery on 24th Street in Chelsea during Spencer Sweeney’s exhibition, The Painted Bride. The gallery’s spacious and striking layout really stood out, and I found the paintings in this show particularly impressive. It was definitely an interesting experience. Brice Marden found more than just a place on this island — he found silence, rhythm, and light.
Hydra, with its timeless calm, became part of his visual language.
Minimalism, born from sea, stone, and stillness.

Brice Marden would have been 85 today and this video reminds me how great he was and also how much I love Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, who retired two weeks ago as head of conservation @whitneymuseum When Carol was at the Menil she founded the ADP to document contemporary artists talking about their materials and how they thought about their work. It was a radical gesture to argue that artists should have a say in the future care of their work, particularly as they explored novel materials. Brice and Carol had a long friendship premised on great respect, and one of their last big projects together (with Matt Skopek) was to finish the restoration of a wonderful painting at the Whitney that had vexed then both for years. Brice and Carol were also both my teachers—she literally when I was in grad school in a seminar with @yvealainbois and for many years after that as one of my wisest and most generous colleagues. She helped me understand the deep and inextricable connection between an artist’s mind, body, and materials. Brice taught me so much about how to look at paintings and also that it was OK—even better—if I couldn’t always describe quite how they made me feel. ❤️ @planeimage in 1992 @menilcollection
Brice Marden spent decades in open dialogue with the painters who came before him, and few relationships ran as deep as the ones with Rothko, Pollock, and Newman. In this 1967 footage, Marden walks through two museums and responds directly to their work, tracing the color, scale, and physical conviction that shaped his own six-decade career.
