Tetsuo Sakurai and Casiopea performing “Domino Line,” live, early 1980s. Casiopea was formed in Tokyo in 1976 by guitarist Issei Noro and bassist Tetsuo Sakurai, two high school students who met through a mutual friend and started out trying to emulate Beck, Bogert & Appice. By the time this footage was shot, they were something else entirely. “Domino Line” was written by Noro and first recorded on the 1981 album Cross Point. The version most people know comes from Mint Jams, the 1982 live album recorded at Chuo Kaikan Hall in Tokyo. That recording is where the song found its definitive shape: the band falling in like dominoes, each instrument triggering the next in the break, building toward Sakurai’s bass solo and then Akira Jimbo’s drum solo. Sakurai started playing bass at 13. By the time Casiopea released Mint Jams he was 24. The solo in “Domino Line” sounds like someone who has been hearing bass lines in his head his entire life and finally has the technique to get them out. Mint Jams brought the band into international attention and launched a decade of sustained output: twelve studio albums, tours across Europe, South America, Australia, and Southeast Asia, collaborations with Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, and Nathan East. Outside Japan, most of the fusion world didn’t know what to make of them. Inside Japan, they were untouchable. Sakurai left Casiopea in 1989 following disputes over concurrent band memberships. He never played “Domino Line” as a member of that band again. #Casiopea #TetsuoSakurai #DominoLine #JazzFusion #MintJams

Casiopea is one of the greatest Japanese fusion bands ever recorded — and this album is exactly why. If you haven’t gotten into them yet, now’s the time. I picked this one up from @dandyrecordsparis , where a lot of my Japanese records come from. Their collection is genuinely remarkable — if you’ve ever asked me where I source my Japanese pressings, this is one of your answers.
