“The only way you retire as an artist is you die.” - Charles Arnoldi I recently sat down with Charles Arnoldi to talk about what keeps a practice alive—following even the most hare-brained ideas, the origins of his stick and chainsaw paintings, and the moment Claes Oldenburg told Art Forum one of Charles’ works was his favorite at Documenta 5 (1972) in Kassel, Germany. I’m grateful to be showing Arnoldi’s work in Booth 903 at the LA Art Show through Sunday. Special thanks to Ethan Cohen Gallery and LA Art Show for their collaboration and spotlighting Sabbatikal this week at the art fair. If you’re in Los Angeles, I hope you’ll spend time with the work. Complimentary tickets in bio. @charlesarnoldistudio @sabbatikalspace @ethancohengallery @laartshow
Admit it—you’ve always dreamed of squeezing a #ClaesOldenburg soft sculpture. While we can’t offer that, we can invite you to make your own soft, stuffed squeezable sculpture inspired by the Pop artist. In this week’s Whitney Kids Art Challenge, Coordinator of Family Programs Laura Protzel shows us how to transform ordinary materials into your very own stuffed sculptures. Visit the link in our bio to check out the full instructional video. Share your creations with us! We’ll be reposting your artworks to our Stories throughout the next few weeks. And stay tuned for more artmaking activities.

Remembering Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022) Artist Alex Da Corte associated sculptures with woodshops that “didn’t feel like a safe space.” But that changed when Oldenburg’s sewn sculptures appeared in Da Corte’s life: “That’s a powerful way to make sculpture. It’s just that we don’t talk about it in regard to sculpture,” he says and continues: “When I saw that Oldenburg and his wife were sewing these works it appealed to me. That language appealed to me. And this idea that softness could be powerful.” 🎥Watch the full video through the link in our bio or on our YouTube channel. 🎥 #claesoldenburg #alexdacorte #popart #louisianamuseum @louisianamuseum @pacegallery @sadiecoleshq @matthewmarksgallery
Today we remember sculptor Claes Oldenburg, who showed us the spectacular in everyday objects for more than half a century. You will be greatly missed. 🍰🍔 #claesoldenburg
Before Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022) was known for his soft and large sculptures that only continued to grow in size over the course of his career, he was also known as one of the progenitors of happenings—quick, ludicrous, theatrical performances usually involving groups of people engaging in scripted or non-scripted scenarios. These are a few clips from Oldenburg’s 1961 16mm circus-like happening, Fotodeath. These happenings took place in storefronts, galleries, and lofts in an explosively creative downtown New York, a response to the old guard of abstract expressionism and a burgeoning pop art movement that used the popular mediums of the zeitgeist to express the vital energy of a new generation of artists that would become the defining movement of the next two decades. The happenings were the rumbling of a future calling us, like a siren, into its videographic and absurdist miasma. #claesoldenburg #happenings #hip #1960s #popart #beatpoetry

We are saddened to hear that Claes Oldenburg, one of the legendary fathers of the Pop Art movement, who collaborated with his late wife Coosje vanBruggen on LLS’ “Toppling Ladder with Spilling Paint,” died today at his home and studio in New York. Among the closest of Frank Gehry’s many long-time artist friends, the sculptors visited Loyola Law School shortly after the first of Gehry’s buildings were up. Asked what the sculpture meant, vanBruggen offered the metaphor of the scales of justice, except that instead of being made of gold and in ideal balance, the real-world scales of justice are made of everyday stuff and are falling over. Please keep Claes, his family and his friends in your thoughts and prayers. #Oldenburg #ClaesOldenburg #Art #PublicArt #Sculpture #Architecture #Gehry #FrankGehry #LawSchool
I will forever find inspiration from Claes Oldenburg and his art. Very sad to see him go. (Please ignore the weird yell in the background. My partner was playing fortnite with a friend.) Also, I’m taking a hiatus from art to focus on other things in my life. If you miss me, let me know. :P #art #claesoldenburg #sculpture #popart
