Thousands flocked to Philadelphia’s Gayborhood for its annual OurFest, in observance of National Coming Out Day. It’s a time to recognize the occasion, but also get to know Philly’s wider LGBTQ+ community and all it offers.

As October marks #hatecrimesawareness month, we are committed to amplifying our initiatives that support and protect individuals and communities targeted by these devasting acts.The FBI's 2023 Hate Crimes Report indicates that there were 11,447 reported hate crimes last year, affecting 13,857 separate victims. It's important to highlight the word "reported," as numerous bias-motivated crimes go unreported to authorities for various reasons, often stemming from fear. Additionally, there are no federal mandates requiring agencies to submit hate crime statistics, which suggests that while 11,862 is already a concerning figure, the actual number is likely even higher.Our office is proud to be part of the Safety in Pride initiative through Rocky Mountain Equality and to collaborate as partners with @hatefreeco. We work with nearly every law enforcement agency in Jefferson County, as well as most of the northern front range, to investigate bias-motivated crimes and support liaison programs. *A hate crime targets an individual, institution, or property, in whole or in part, because of their perceived race, color, ancestry, religion, national origin, gender identity, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation. Hate crimes are meant to scare, intimidate, or humiliate the target. They have an impact that lingers and extends beyond the specific victim.
