No es casualidad que Mr. Darcy siga generando tanta conexión: su conflicto es profundamente humano, considerando la época, el contexto y las normas sociales de ese tiempo. En la escena de Orgullo y Prejuicio, en la que Darcy decide declararse, se puede ver un caso de disonancia cognitiva bastante humano: Darcy siente un afecto real por Elizabeth, pero ese sentimiento choca con sus creencias sobre estatus, normas sociales y lo que considera una unión “adecuada”. Y la familia de ella, con conductas que se podían percibir como poco discretas o interesadas, intensificaban ese conflicto sin querer. Para reducir la incomodidad, Darcy intenta explicar su elección y sentimientos subrayando los obstáculos que ha tenido que “superar”, resultando, de manera no intencional, en un momento insultante e incomodo para Elizabeth. No es que Darcy niegue lo que siente, sino que todavía no logra integrarlo del todo con sus propios esquemas.
