Steve Lacy - Dark Red (2017)
“Dark Red,” a standout track from Steve Lacy’s 2017 debut solo EP Steve Lacy’s Demo, is one of six songs entirely written, recorded, and produced on his iPhone using GarageBand, all from his bedroom in Compton.
The song explores emotional turmoil, anxiety, and the creeping insecurity of a relationship on the verge of falling apart. Rather than focusing on heartbreak itself, it captures the anticipation of it. Lines like “Something bad is coming, I don’t know what” reflect a feeling he can’t fully explain, while the chorus sees him pleading for his partner to stay, driven by the fear of losing her.
The track ends without resolution, leaving that tension hanging. Speaking to Genius, Lacy explained, “I was just really paranoid because I really liked this girl at the time. I didn’t know if she liked me back,” giving more context to the uncertainty that defines the song.
From its lo-fi production to Lacy’s raw, vulnerable vocals, “Dark Red” later found a second life on TikTok, being used for nostalgic and breakup-driven videos. Given the resurgence, it pushed past a billion streams, cementing it as a Steve Lacy classic and establishing his reputation as a genre-bending artist from the get go.

∆
“Dark Red” is about knowing a relationship is ending but still holding on.
The song captures regret, distance, and emotions left unsaid.
Steve Lacy wrote it from a place of realization too late.
The minimal production makes the sadness feel heavier.
A song about love slipping away while you’re still in it
