🤿 A Good Dive Instructor Doesn’t Just Teach Skills — They Organize the Dive As a dive instructor, you need to think carefully about how you organize yourself and your students underwater. Where are you positioned? Where are your students? Can you see everyone? Can they see you? Can you react immediately if someone needs help? You might have a perfect plan before entering the water. But sometimes, once you descend, you realize: This isn’t working the way I expected. Maybe the current is different. Maybe visibility is worse. Maybe one student needs more attention. Maybe your formation makes it difficult to maintain control. And that’s okay. A good instructor doesn’t stubbornly stick to the original plan. A good instructor recognizes the situation and changes the organization underwater. Move yourself. Reposition your students. Change the formation. Slow things down. The goal isn’t to make the dive look exactly like the plan you made on land. The goal is to maintain control, communication and safety while creating the best possible learning environment. That ability to observe, evaluate and adapt is one of the differences between simply knowing how to teach a skill and becoming a good dive instructor. At Oceans 5 Gili Air, this is something we emphasize during our SSI Instructor Training Courses: think, observe, adapt.
