Undiscovered Bloomsbury group painting?
Have you ever spotted a painting you just know is special and is hugely underpriced?
I spied this lovely landscape with a signature and estimate of £80 - not catalogued as the fine Bloomsbury set artist I was certain it was. I was sure it was a Duncan Grant.
Sadly I wasn’t the only one to recognise this picture. The hammer went down at £2000 - still good value for this artist if authenticated.

🙌 You’ve done it 🙌
Lessons in the Orchard is saved!
Thanks to your overwhelming support we are delighted to announce that we have successfully raised the money needed to permanently secure Duncan Grant’s painting, ‘Lessons in the Orchard’, for our collection.
So, what better way to thank you all than a message from cultural icon and star of stage and screen Helena Bonham Carter reciting ‘Lessons in the Orchard’ – an original poem by Carol Ann Duffy inspired by the painting and commissioned by Charleston.
Together we have prevented this beloved work from going to auction and disappearing from public view. We’re staggered by how many friends, visitors and supporters have donated to make this happen – over 250 of you! Thank you, we are so grateful.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the house to see the artwork beside Vanessa Bell’s bedside once again.
With thanks to Art Fund and Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and National Lottery for their support.

This work was painted around the same time as Duncan Grant’s first solo exhibition and shows his daring abandonment of traditional constraints in still-life painting. Boldly painted works like this secured Grant’s reputation as a central proponent of modern British art and a leading artist of his generation. Another version of this work, executed on canvas, was likely exhibited at his first solo exhibition in 1920 at the Carfax Paterson Gallery in London.
Price on request.

This is Charleston, home of painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, which I visited with Jeana @hotcocoareads and Triin @wordchild last weekend.
🎨
Charleston was a gathering point for some of the 20th century’s most radical artists, writers (including Vanessa’s sister Virginia Woolf) and thinkers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group.
🧐
The garden is lovely, with an abundance colourful hollyhocks and sweet peas, and the house if full of decorated furniture and wonderful paintings.

This wonderful tray painted by Duncan Grant C1920 arrived and unpacked. I’m so very lucky to be the custodian of this wonderful, fun, rare and decorative tray. A huge thank you to the generous friend who helped me acquire this. Funnily, I was the under bidder of this many years ago at Bonhams - if you wish hard enough objects seem to eventually find you. #duncangrant #robertkimesale
We’re pleased to be offering this intimate work by Duncan Grant and George Bergen in our forthcoming Art & Design Post 1880 sale on 16 September (estimate £4,000 to £6,000).
Believed to have been painted at Charleston around 1930, it reflects a close creative and personal connection between the two men, whose relationship unfolded alongside Grant’s domestic partnership with fellow artist Vanessa Bell.
Grant remains a central figure in British modernism and one of the country’s most significant queer artists.
With Pride celebrations taking place this weekend, it feels especially fitting therefore to spotlight this important piece of queer art.

🐈Here’s to a purrfect Christmas! 🐈
There’s nothing better than receiving a handmade card in the post…
Alongside being a fan of felines, Julian Trevelyan (1910–1988) was an artist and poet and a founding member of the British Surrealist Group.
This very cute Christmas card is safely tucked away in our collection stores – but at this time of year, it deserves pride of place once more!

I spent another couple of hours today channeling my inner Bloomsbury artist! I am really enjoying depicting this Sunderland jug lustre with its decorative bouquet. Inspired by the enchanting murals at Charleston House, I’m embracing the spirit of Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant. As a printmaker, experimenting with a different medium feels like a breath of fresh air. 🌬️ Can’t wait to see how this enriches my printmakingpractice. I hope you will continue to join me me on this painterly journey, stay tuned for the grand reveal! Much love T x

Ever heard of the Bloomsbury Group? If not, you’re not alone! Today, we explored the breathtaking Charleston Farmhouse in Firle, East Sussex, and guess what? This place is all about the Bloomsbury Group! 🖼
Okay, so back in the early 1900s, there was this group of creative people who lived in a place called Bloomsbury in London. They were writers, artists, and super-smart thinkers who loved doing things their own way. They believed in freedom of expression and weren’t afraid to shake things up a bit!
In 1916, painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant (the main figures of the group) moved to Charleston, and almost as soon as they moved in, they began painting every surface in the farmhouse, transforming it into a living, breathing work of art.
And here’s a fun fact: Charleston Farmhouse (yes, the one we visited today) became one of the group’s favorite spots to hang out! 🪩
So, visiting Charleston Farmhouse is like stepping into the world of the Bloomsbury Group. You get to see where these creative minds lived and worked, surrounded by their amazing art and unique style. 👩🏻🎨
🐩 Oh, and obviously here’s some good news for dog lovers… While the house itself isn’t dog-friendly, dogs are more than welcome in the beautiful walled garden, shop, and café. ☕️🌾
Trust me, it’s a stunning location you won’t want to miss! Plus, the team at Charleston is excellent, highly knowledgeable, graciously addressing my inquiries, and going the extra mile to showcase every detail. It’s a pretty special place to explore! 🎨📚

The finale of the @dior show. The show set featured 19,000 plants.
At either end of the runway stood two houses: smaller-scale reproductions of Christian Dior’s childhood home in Granville, France, and Charleston, the farmhouse in England that Bloomsbury Group painters Duncan Grant and Vanessa Ball transformed into a living work of art, starting from 1916.
@mrkimjones, artistic director of menswear at Dior, has been doubling down on his exploration of the house’s history as it marks its 75th anniversary. Having discovered both Dior and Grant in his teens, he was struck by the similarities between the two, who were born on the same day, 20 years apart.
“I just thought it was interesting to have a conversation between two men that have had a big impact on my life that I've never met,” he said.
