#jamuary2024 day18: Electroplankton sampler?
Using a custom cable that I made from a Nintendo DS headset plug (yes, those exist), I turned the Rec-Rec Electroplankton into a lofi 4 track sampler (usually you use the in-built microphone to record). I recorded some sounds from the @artiphon Orba. Then I am able to pitch the sounds up or down with the D-pad (not pitch quantized). A press of the A button returns the playback to original speed.
I used this technique in the popular YouTube video "Electroplankton Opus 1-3" from 2015. :)

why not play music and video games at the same time? 🤔 I wanted to make an ambient piece based on the amazing atmosphere in the game Attack of The Friday Monsters for 3ds
I’m going to Tokyo soon and I can’t wait to experience the vibes! if you are there and would like to make some music let me know :)

Lumiloop (from Electroplankton) is one of those rare instruments that quietly reshapes your relationship with creativity, not through complexity, but through a kind of simplicity that leaves you alone with the act itself.
There are no notes to trigger, no timeline to organize, no way to save what you create. You draw a circle, set it in motion, and a tone begins to emerge—steady, continuous, almost like a breath sustained by your presence. The sound doesn’t feel played, it feels held, shaped by your movement and released the moment you let go.
What’s powerful is that everything already lives in harmony. You’re not trying to make it “work,” you’re simply exploring within a space that already resonates. And in that, something shifts: the pressure to produce fades, and creation becomes less about building something and more about entering a state.
Lumiloop reminds me that not everything needs to be captured to be meaningful, and that sometimes creating is just that… being there long enough for something to pass through you.

This is a pretty dope game when the rhythms hit.
One of the DS' best sounding games.

💧 something ambient today played with Electroplankton on the DS and the OP1 field. I love looping sounds through the delay on the op1 to create slowly fading soundscapes that feel infinite ♾️
do you want to hear more ambient stuff from me?

Some stuff from this weekend - bird jams and fun with Electroplankton, one of my favorite DS games . My omnichord broke down a few times during the show 🥲 so it was a stressful performance, but I’m glad to have shared it with so many cool people ! I’m working on improving my gear, so stay tuned for my next performance and hopefully it will go more smoothly 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 #omnichord #synth #synthesizers #suzuki #teenageengineering #pocketoperator #nintendo #nintendods #nintendo3ds #electroplankton
Electroplankton on Nintendo DS
I used to have this a long time ago. Now I am stoked to have it back.
It is a generative music game on the Nintendo DS
Next week I’ll show you it being fed into a Guitar pedal, it is ambient bliss.

Finally got to play Electroplankton! Weird little Nintendo DS music “game” I learned of. Was telling @wordsrioting about it and she promptly tracked it down. I’ll definitely be sampling it…

This —hologram is not the right word— reflection of #RyuichiSakamoto on glass, is a part of an art installation collaboration with @iwaixiwai_official (Tenori-On, Electroplankton), where each note played ‘live’ on a MIDI piano is accompanied by a particle effect on the blue screen. The effect is heartbreakingly gorgeous. It felt like Sakamoto-san was there in the room with us.
Check it out, if you happen to be in Tokyo, at the ‘seeing sounds, hearing time’ exhibit, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. #ToshioIwai #artinstallation #piano #YMO #exhibition #坂本龍一 @mot_museum_art_tokyo
