The older I get, the more I question the whole voting system.
Not because I don’t care about the world.
But because I care a lot… and sometimes it feels like we’re being asked to vote on things that don’t actually matter that much, while we have almost no say on the things that really do.
We’re told voting means we have a voice.
But we vote for people, not the decisions.
And the decisions are the things that actually shape our lives.
The policies.
The spending.
The laws.
The long-term projects.
The things that affect housing, healthcare, education, the environment, and the future.
Meanwhile the people in power — no matter the party — often seem mostly focused on staying in power, looking good, maintaining control, and winning the next election.
Imagine if the goal of leadership wasn’t re-election.
Imagine if the goal was actually to leave the country and the world better than when they found it.
Sometimes it just feels like the system isn’t built to create the best long-term decisions.
It’s built to create people who are good at staying in power.
And those are very different things
Things I’ve never had to do since I started voting at 18:
1. Wait in line to vote
2. Take time off work to vote
3. Find childcare so I can go vote
4. Early vote
5. Pre-plan my ballot
6. Stand in a voting booth
The ritual of sitting around my family’s kitchen table, talking about the candidates and issues, using our voters guide to answer questions and get more information, and taking our time, not being rushed—it was a huge milestone when I turned 18 in 2004. And it was possible because of vote by mail, a widely successful public service that leads to some of the highest voter turnout in the country.
It’s also safe, secure, and has extremely rare instances of voter fraud.
Hands off our vote by mail 💌🇺🇸
As Election Day is coming to a close, I wanted to thank you all for participating in our democracy. Your voice truly matters and I am honored to be your democratic nominee for 53rd House District of Illinois. I will continue to work to earn your vote for the General Election on November 3rd of this year.
It’s Election Day. Make your voice heard. 🗳️
But did it work?
And HIIIIII from Disney!
I just wanted to let some of the candidates know that at the polls, I encountered some issues. Thankfully 🙌🏻 the incredible poll workers were able to help! But just in case others experience situations like this, I wanted to let them know to not be afraid to get help from their poll workers! ❤️(Note- I am not accusing the poll machine of being corrupted in any way. It was just weird that on the day my name was flagged, which has never happened before, it took several attempts to read my ballot.)
How I always go to bed the night before voting

It’s hard to envision the future sometimes, especially when the present is so chaotic, but we still have to try to make things better, and elections are a great place to start!!
Mark your calendars for March 10 and get out and #VOTE next week! #SystemicChangeStartsWithUs
