~My Dowel Method~ This vase is secured in its puzzle-piece setting, and is able to maintain a channel (no matter how dang small) with help from a wooden dowel! When I score and attach these two pieces, I squish with much force, causing slip and clay to squeeze out. As the dowel is a solid, unmoving force, it allows me to assure a clear through-way as well as compress from the inside, by sliding it up and down, applying pressure outwardly. Additionally, it helps me work towards a proper alignment. Maintaining where the channel is, I can make adjustments to the shape of the joining edges to assure the best fit. Regretfully, I didn’t take a video of the actual squish in action but this is the general idea. These forms can be a head scratcher to build, so working with a guiding force, helps! The wonderful thing about setting myself a 7-day studio challenge is seeing what has emerged from simply allowing myself the time to play. For a long time I’ve been wanting to develop a series of lighting, pendants and lamps, but somehow the idea has always been pushed aside for something more pressing. Spending this past week in my studio, making without an agenda or a particular outcome in mind, has stimulated my creativity in a way I hadn’t quite expected. One idea has led to another, forms have begun to evolve, and suddenly I find myself exploring a direction I’ve been thinking about for years. It’s reminded me just how important play is in a creative practice. Not everything we make needs to have a purpose, be for a workshop, become a product, or even be successful. Sometimes we simply need to give ourselves permission to experiment, follow our curiosity and see where it takes us. This handbuilding pottery workshop in Oakland with @artist.yingling at @yolin_art_studio was the most hands on activity I’d done in such a long time and it was so fun to do as a date activity!
