3 tips for a rock-solid contact position with independent breeds! 🐾✨
Working with independent dogs means we have to be extra smart about how we build value and engagement.
If you're struggling with focus or positioning during heelwork, try these 3 tips:
1. Use your hand as a frame: Get your dog into a sit right next to you, and use the hand closest to the dog to create a gentle, visual frame. This helps guide them into the right spot and gives them a clear boundary.
2. Feed from above: When rewarding, deliver the treat from directly above their head. This reinforces the exact position you want, preventing them from lunging forward or twisting out of place.
3. Move away to build motivation: Once you finish the exercise, release your dog and actively move away from them. The faster the better.
Creating distance naturally taps into their desire to follow you, boosting their drive and excitement for the next rep! 🚀

It sounds strange at first, but fast responses, explosive recalls, beautiful heelwork, and commitment to commands are not created by repeating obedience over and over.
They are created by developing the physical and mental abilities that align with your dog’s natural instincts and allow them to perform with speed, confidence, and precision.
Many dogs aren’t stubborn. They simply haven’t unlocked their movement potential yet.
My Golden Retriever didn’t unlock these abilities until he was three years old. Today, at seven, he responds with the speed, precision, and enthusiasm many people believe is only possible when training starts in puppyhood.
This approach is taught exclusively within the STSK9™ training system.
Inside our MVP™ program, you’ll learn the complete blueprint behind developing movement, drive, and the abilities that make reliable obedience possible. You’ll receive coaching and guidance throughout the entire process, so you can build the same foundations and achieve the same, or even better, outcomes with your own dog.

To care so much about emotion and expression in heelwork can seem unnecessary — but the truth is that it might be the key you’re missing 🔑
The focused heel is such a weight baring exercise in sport — almost every exercise and discipline starts, ends or gets executed from heelwork.
Spending time making our dogs love it isn’t a waste of time — it’s an investment in everything. Emotion and clarity in heelwork will transfer to other parts of obedience and it will even make your bitework behaviours more crisp.

Not every obedience session has to be about perfection. Sometimes, it’s all about having fun. 🐾💙
This little clip from yesterday is exactly that. My goal wasn’t to create perfect heelwork—it was simply to enjoy training together.
We played a lot, mixed in short heelwork sequences, I moved more freely, and just let him enjoy the game. And that’s when you can really see him come alive. Sure, he’s not quite as precise as during our regular training sessions, but he’s having so much fun—and that’s incredibly valuable to me.
So here’s my advice: Every now and then, head to the training field without putting pressure on yourself. Do what both you and your dog enjoy. These sessions build motivation, strengthen your relationship, and make the “serious” training even better in the long run. ❤️
Because a dog that works with joy will often give you so much more than a dog that simply works out of routine. ✨
