Laptop-friendly Excel shortcuts high finance professionals rely on when working while traveling.
Alt + W + N — open a second view of the same Excel file to see how one tab impacts another
Alt + Tab — switch between recent windows when you’re working off one screen
Windows + Arrow — split your screen into two; snap Excel next to email, PDFs, or CIMs without using your mouse
Alt + H + V — paste values, formulas, or formats without breaking your model or using right click
Ctrl + Page Up / Page Down — move between worksheets in Excel instantly
Speed still matters when you’re working from a laptop.

Staying updated on markets without expensive subscriptions. My simple system ⬇️
If you work in high finance — or are preparing to get in — staying informed is crucial. It helps you understand what’s moving markets, connect news to companies and deals, and speak clearly in interviews and in front of seniors & clients.
This is a proven, simple setup I use:
FREE ARTICLES
– Reuters → fast, factual headlines. This is the backbone. Scan 5–10 min/day.
– Bloomberg.com → generous free articles. Use this for 1–2 deeper reads in the morning when it’s quiet.
– BBC News (Business) → clean global context. Optional, good for macro awareness.
– The Guardian (Business) → big-picture stories. Optional, selective reads only.
– Yahoo Finance → free stock data, indices, earnings. Use anytime for quick checks, especially if you're not on the job yet and do not have access to a Bloomberg Terminal or FactSet / CapIQ.
Keep scanning headlines throughout the day and set up alerts especially for the companies you are tracking. Pro tip: sign up to their newsletter too, like this you're often quicker at getting any news than seniors.
Important: you don’t need to read every single article.
Reuters + Bloomberg already cover 80% of what matters. And on very busy days, focus on only the headlines.
FREE PODCASTS
– Daily (pick one, not both):
• WSJ Minute Briefing → very short, perfect when time is tight
• FT News Briefing → slightly deeper daily context. Personally, I picked this one as it gives a bit more context without taking up more than 10-15mins. Perfect for a commute.
– Weekly:
• Wall Street Week (Bloomberg) → listen on a quiet Sunday to reset, understand the bigger picture, and start the week prepared
• The Journal (WSJ) → optional deep dive into one major story
In a nutshell:
Mornings are best for deeper reads.
During the day: quick headline scans.
Sundays: slow down, zoom out, reset.

Five Unspoken Rules of High Finance
Understanding finance is not about which role sounds more elite.
It is about understanding how money is actually deployed and how returns are generated.
• Private Equity
Invests in private companies, improves operations, and exits in 3–7 years.
Focuses on control, long-term value creation, and operational impact.
• Hedge Fund
Invests in public markets like stocks, bonds, derivatives, and other securities.
Focuses on generating returns through market movements, mispricing, and strategy.
• Private vs public markets
• Illiquid vs liquid investments
• Operational improvement vs market positioning
• Long-term hold vs daily mark-to-market
If you want a simple one-pager breaking down the real day to day of Private Equity and Hedge Funds, comment “HF” and I will share it.
Both sit inside high finance, but they require very different skill sets and mindsets.

1. Don’t Chase Certifications Randomly
Collecting CFA, FRM, CMT, FMVA without a plan wastes time and momentum. Pick certifications that match your path – CFA for investing, FRM for risk, CMT for markets, CPA for accounting. Be strategic, not decorative.
2. Don’t Ignore the Basics (Accounting + Excel)
If you can’t read financial statements or build a basic model, you won’t survive finance. The fundamentals drive everything – without them, you collapse fast.
Know the WHY behind every line item.
⸻
3. Don’t Network Only When You Need a Job
Reaching out only when desperate makes you look transactional. Build relationships early through curiosity and consistency – that’s how you earn real referrals and mentorships. Dedicate weekends to networking. In high finance, your network is your net worth.
4. Don’t Stay a Generalist for Too Long
Finance rewards specialists – not “average at everything” candidates. After your foundation, pick a niche (IB, Markets, PE, ER, Credit, FP&A, Valuations, Consulting) and go deep in one sector. Become the go to person.
5. Don’t Rely Only on Technical Skills
Technicals get you hired – but communication and storytelling get you promoted. Most senior roles are selling, influencing, pitching.
Storyselling becomes your #1 skill as you rise.

Most Finance CVs fail for one fundamental reason.
They are written to describe a candidate, not to filter one.
In high finance, a CV is not a biography.
It is a screening instrument.
Recruiters don’t read your CV line by line.
They scan it in 6 to 10 seconds to answer three questions:
• Does this person understand the game?
• Does this profile signal relevance?
• Is it worth spending time on this candidate?
Everything below exists to answer those questions.
Credits : @maison_finance ✅
1️⃣ Structure beats content
Structure is the first signal you send.
Before anyone evaluates your experience, they evaluate your thinking.
Clean sections, logical order, consistent spacing and alignment
signal clarity, prioritization and control.
A cluttered CV suggests cluttered thinking.
In finance, that is an immediate red flag.
2️⃣ Signals matter more than buzzwords
Finance is a signaling industry.
Words like “motivated” or “passionate about finance” do nothing.
What survives the scan are signals:
recognized firm names
deal or transaction exposure
technical tools actually used
measurable responsibility.
3️⃣ One page. No excuses
One page is not a preference.
It is a stress test.
If you cannot compress your profile into one page,
you will struggle to compress ideas and decisions.
Conciseness equals competence.
4️⃣ Finance is results and impact
Listing tasks shows activity.
Showing impact proves value.
Wrong
“Responsible for financial analysis”
Right
“Built valuation models for live M&A transactions,
contributing to over €XXm in closed deals”
Outcome and impact over activity. Always.
This is exactly how CVs are screened in
Investment Banking
Private Equity
Asset Management

I worked in high finance, so I know a thing or two about performative “productivity” ⬇️
There are a loooot of habits in corporate culture that might *look* like they drive impact & success… but don’t be fooled. Most of them are really just performative.
They make you look busy.
They make you look dedicated.
They make you look like a “hard worker”
But they don’t actually make you better at your job (which is what actually matters !!!!). In fact, most of them just burn through your mental and emotional energy so aggressively that you have less capacity for the work that actually matters and the life you life outside of work.
I mean things like:
• acting stressed or with panicked urgency to prove you care
• offering to work over PTO for non-urgent matters
• responding to every ping or email instantly
• bragging about your late night / weekend work
• trying to be one of the “bros” rather than being yourself just to fit in
• being the first online and last offline (and making sure people know it)
• filling your calendar with meetings so you seem “busy”
• saying yes to everything so you look like a go-getter
• creating extra busy work that’s *not* value add and overworks your teams just to show off how much you work
I’ve worked in really competitive, intense environments throughout my career in investment banking and private equity. I’ve been drained by performative work and corporate theater. And I’ve learned that the ones who are *actually* productive and successful do this instead:
✅ protect their time
✅ focus only on work that moves the needle
✅ don’t confuse being busy with being effective
✅ don’t minimize their strengths to blend in
✅ remembers impact > effort gets you noticed
The goal isn’t to LOOK productive, it’s to actually perform well, but without destroying your boundaries and nervous system in the process.
