Hurricane chasing. Filming Hurricane Harvey in Rockport, Texas.
Houston first responders are about to get the ultimate training ground. STORM RANCH will be the country’s largest swift-water rescue facility, complete with floodable urban streets, training ponds and swift water channels. From Hurricane Harvey to the Hill Country flood, this is Houston preparing for when disaster strikes.
We remember Hurricane Harvey, the storm that came ashore 5 years ago & changed the face of Houston for decades to come. While recovery continues, we remember those who died in the storm, we thank the heroes who responded & we continue the work of building a more resilient Houston.
Some heroes don’t wear capes; they just build beautiful homes and walk through floods to save lives. 🌟 My godmother @bennierealtor the bravest soul I know, just celebrated her new house in Houston. It brings back memories of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when I went with her alone into those floods to rescue her friend and kids. I’ll be real — I was scared like everyone else. But she? Fearless. Her courage carried us through. 💛 Her husband — our Odogwu, a man with a diamond heart — was amazed as always, cheering her on like he does every time she wins. And she wins a lot, because she’s not just a hero, she’s also one of the biggest Realtors in the United States, conquering Texas year after year. To my fans, family, and loved ones: help me celebrate her today — not just for me, but for the immense things she has done directly for my family. 🥂❤️ And if you’re serious about buying a home in the U.S., no backside, no drama, no games — go to her page and DM her directly. She hates nonsense, she’s more intelligent than I am, and I believe she’ll only answer the serious ones. My Family loves you Big Mummy. Can’t wait to cook with you in this beautiful kitchen as we always like to do.😁 #TrueHero #FamilyFirst #CelebrateHer #RealtorQueen #Adaanioma #nwunyendianambra
A 13 year old quietly saved 17 people during Hurricane Harvey and never told a soul. No cameras. No praise. Just pure kindness. Some people do good because it’s who they are, not because anyone is watching. Humility like that is rare and powerful. Kindness is free and it always finds its way back to you. 💛 #humanityrestored #actsofkindness #inspiringstories
In 2017, I was asked to help the community in Houston after Hurricane Harvey. Disasters change everything and people often don't think about those losses as grief. Besides death grief comes in many forms. So this is more than just a hole in the ground. It’s a water well for fresh water at Born Like This, an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya that I support—and that many of you have helped through my GoFundMe. Of which we are still taking donations for the children’s Christmas gifts this year (link in bio) I first met Phoebe Onyango through my live streams back in 2017, when I used to broadcast from my truck while picking up my son from school. I remember her on my Don Williams live stream—I was singing Don Williams songs for my friends and family in Beaumont, Texas, who were suffering through Hurricane Harvey. Phoebe was there, praying for them, keeping them in her thoughts. Then something miraculous happened. Fast-forward to 2020. I got a little money, and it was exactly the same amount Phoebe needed to buy land for the orphanage. To me, it was a sign. This was my moment to pay forward all the generosity you showed me during COVID. With your help, we bought that land. We’ve built lodging and school rooms, helped them through devastating floods, and now—thanks to those of you who contributed to the well fundraiser—these children have fresh water for Christmas. What could be better, really? It makes me grateful for where I live and what I have. And it reminds me what this season is truly about. So from the bottom of that well and from the bottom of our hearts—thank you. Krismasi Njema, Happy Hanukkah, Feliz Navidad, Joyeux Noël,Merry Christmas Keep the faith, keep doing good, and keep giving. Joy, joy to the well
Meet Atiba! A Houston, Texas local, Atibta volunteered to support our recovery efforts when Hurricane Harvey struck his community back in 2017. After having such a positive experience giving back to his community, he decided to apply for one of our full-time positions as an IT Specialist. “Working with FEMA, I get to see a lot of different areas come together to complete the mission. Being able to help make a difference, it’s the world.”
Inspired by the strength of the Houston community in rebuilding after Hurricane Harvey, Demi Soloist Jack Wolff has choreographed a ballet with four distinct sections, each representing a phase of experiencing such a natural disaster. Through contrasting sharp and fluid movements, he hopes to highlight the fact that sometimes there can be beauty in catastrophe. ⛅ ‌ Don’t miss Jack’s piece “Category Four”, premiering as part of the Margaret Alkek Williams Jubilee of Dance on Friday, December 1st.
