When in doubt, sit on their face
GUARD: THE GREAT EQUALIZER November 1993. UFC 1. Royce Gracie 74kgs, no visible muscle, up against men twice his size who looked like they could break him in half. He won the whole tournament. Not by out-muscling anyone. By pulling them into his Guard and making their size irrelevant. That night changed martial arts forever. Every striker, every wrestler, every "tough guy" watched a smaller man control and finish bigger men from his back — a position everyone had been taught to fear. Overnight, the world learned that Guard isn't a losing position. It's a weapon. Thirty years later, this is still the most misunderstood concept in martial arts. People think Guard is defense. It's not. It's offense in disguise. Every sweep. Every submission. Every setup you'll ever hit it opens from Guard. It's not the position you survive from. It's the position you attack from. I've been obsessed with playing Guard since the day I started. And here's what nobody tells you when you're starting out: you don't need flexibility. You don't need strength. You need your mind. I built my entire game on this belief. I'm not the most flexible guy on the mats. Never was. Guard rewards technique, timing, and patience not how far your hips open up. That's what makes it addictive. It's chess, not a wrestling match. This is exactly why every woman needs to learn Guard. In the real world, the worst-case scenario is rarely a fair fight. It's someone bigger, heavier, stronger on top of you. Guard is the one position built specifically for that exact scenario. It's not a hypothetical self-defense class move. It's a full system for surviving and fighting back when size is working against you. That's the deeper reason we train. Martial arts isn't just about competition or trophies. It's about preparing your mind and body for the worst day of your life the day you hope never comes, but train for anyway. Guard is the clearest example of that principle in the entire sport. It takes the moment everyone fears most being underneath someone bigger and turns it into your strongest position. So if you've been putting off starting Jiu Jitsu because you think you're "not flexible e

🇺🇸 Before she became a UFC strawweight champion, Mackenzie Dern was already one of the most accomplished Jiu Jitsu competitors of her generation. Dern won IBJJF World titles at blue, purple, and brown belt before reaching the top of the sport as a black belt. But beyond the medals, she became known for her fearlessness — regularly entering the open class and testing her Jiu Jitsu against opponents significantly larger than her.
