For the first time in 150 years, Cherie DeVaux has flipped the script and rewritten history. She became the first woman trainer to ever win the Kentucky Derby when her horse, Golden Tempo, captured the 152nd running of the race, ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz. DeVaux established her own stable in 2018 with just eight horses, and it took 11 months to win her first race. She rose from stable worker to assistant trainer, and her journey hasn’t been easy. What makes her accomplishment exceptional is this: In the Derby’s 152-year history, only 19 starters had ever been trained by women before DeVaux. The only woman who came close to training the winner before her was Shelley Riley in 1992, when Casual Lies finished second. Cherie DeVaux didn’t just make history. She shattered the decades of undermining women. “I’m glad I can be representative sentative of women everywhere,” DeVaux said in a postrace interview on the broadcast. “We can do anything we set our minds to” Video Credit: @americasbestracing
