The Ancient Gorges of Karijini National Park 🇦🇺
Deep in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia lies a landscape so old and alien it feels like stepping onto Mars. Karijini National Park isn't just beautiful; it is a geological time capsule that records the exact moment our planet changed forever.
🌍 The Earth’s First Breath:
The massive, layered red cliffs you see here are known as "Banded Iron Formations." They were formed 2.5 billion years ago during the Great Oxidation Event. Before this, Earth had almost no oxygen. When ancient cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) started photosynthesizing, they released oxygen into the oceans, which reacted with dissolved iron to "rust" the water. This rust settled on the sea floor, layer by layer, creating the vibrant red rock you hike through today. You are literally walking through the fossilized evidence of the atmosphere forming!
🎒 Why It’s Must-Visit Today:
Geology aside, Karijini is an adventure playground. The landscape is carved into deep, narrow slot canyons that hide emerald-green swimming holes and thundering waterfalls.
• Hancock Gorge: Famous for the "Spider Walk," where you have to straddle the rock walls with your hands and feet to navigate the narrow chasm.
• Fern Pool: A sacred Aboriginal place and a stunning natural oasis surrounded by lush ferns and waterfalls.
• Fortescue Falls: The park's only permanent waterfall, perfect for a cooling swim after a dusty hike.
If you are willing to brave the isolation and the red dust, Karijini offers an ancient, raw beauty that puts the rest of the world into perspective.

📌 Follow @the.lost.postcards for our series sharing 100 places you NEED to visit in Western Australia!
Welcome to, Hamersley Gorge, one of the most iconic hikes in Karijini and famous for its natural “spa pool” tucked into the gorge.
📍 Part 4/100: Hamersley Gorge is in Karijini National Park (Pilbara, WA)
⏱️ How long to spend here: 2–4 hours. Enough time to walk in, swim, and actually enjoy it without rushing.
🌤 We recommend visiting in the dry season (May–September) for cooler days and safer conditions, the national park is known to flood in the wet season
🚗 There is a mix of sealed and unsealed gravel roads to access Hamersley Gorge so make sure you have a 4WD for this trip as conditions can change quickly
🥾 BONUS: The rocks leading down to the Gorge get slippery so make sure you wear proper enclosed shoes and keep an eye on the water level
💌 Save this to add Hamersley Gorge and Spa to your travel bucket list!
📌 Tiger Eye Pool Camp
Only 15 minutes from Tom Price, so it’s the perfect place to pull up after you’ve stocked up in town. Just like our other fave spot, most people stop right at the very beginning… but trust me, keep driving in. There are heaps of beautiful camp sites further along with no one anywhere near you.
This spot in particular is absolutely stunning, but because it sits right up on a little hill it is freezing. If you want to stay here, make sure you’re loaded up with firewood because you’ll be burning through it.
If being blasted by icy wind isn’t your vibe, there are plenty of sheltered sites tucked in closer to the mountain. Still just as beautiful, just not nearly as cold. 😂

This is our favourite free camp near Karijini in the Pilbara…
📍Albert Tognolini Rest Area
Just outside the national park’s eastern edge, this gorgeous free camp spreads along a ridgeline - a little further from the gorges, but perfect for relaxing and soaking up the beauty of the Pilbara after you’ve finished exploring the gorge walks.
The elevated sites deliver magnificent Pilbara sunsets and front-row views of road trains cruising the valley. Aim to arrive early to snag a ridgeline spot with these sweeping views.

Mt Bruce was epic!!
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to climb it. The 2nd tallest peak in @westernaustralia. Located in Karijini National Park, the middle of nowhere, but well worth the trip out here!
Rugged, technical and so damn beautiful. Classic Pilbara. Classic @australiasnorthwest.
Been there, done that? Not until you’ve road-tripped these Western Australia wonders! 🛣️🌟

📍Karijini National Park, Western Australia
If you’re looking for breathtaking gorges, epic hikes, and stunning swimming spots, Karijini National Park in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is a must visit. Here are some of the best spots to explore:
Hamersley Gorge & Spa Pool: I don’t even know how this place is real, nature is insane! The spa pool is incredible but it’s a slippery climb to it so be careful on your way.
Mount Bruce: WA’s second highest peak and a must see in Karijini. The hike is challenging (especially if you have a fear of height like me 🙃) but rewards you with insane panoramic views over the national park.
Knox Gorge: A gem with towering red rock walls, stunning pools, and a beautiful lookout. One of my favourites in Karijini.
Kalamina Gorge: A seriously stunning gorge that starts with a really steep descent but it’s worth the climb down. I would recommend a 4WD to get there as the road is very bumpy.
Fern Pool & Fortescue Falls: Super easy to access if you’re staying at Dales campground. The waterfall is beautiful and the pool is the perfect for cooling off after a day of hiking.
