Introducing…#TheKingCenter’s 2026 King Holiday Observance Theme and Signature Image Each year, The King Center carefully selects a theme for King Holiday Observance and the calendar year — a theme that reflects the enduring work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King. "Mission Possible 2: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way.” This year’s theme is a call to action—to both envision + create the Beloved Community. Let’s create the Beloved Community by building community in our families, schools, social media, and other areas of life. Building community encompasses addressing real needs: cultivating equitable systems, expanding access to housing and education, enacting compassionate legislation, and fostering spaces where everyone can thrive. To unite a nation, we must lead with courage and “other-centeredness,” practice love-centered communication, and work to transform unjust systems—together. And what does it mean to do it “the nonviolent way”? It means embracing and employing Kingian Nonviolence (Nonviolence 365) —living love and justice every day of the year. It means choosing true peace over division, advocacy over apathy, and action over silence. This is more than a theme—it’s a mission we can all accept. This Mission is Possible. It's rare, but presidential inaugurations and Martin Luther King Jr. Day have fallen on the same day before. 2025 marks the first time it has occurred since former President Barack Obama's second inauguration in 2013. This year, The King Center will celebrate the 41st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the theme Mission Possible II: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way. The hustle and bustle of the celebration thrills Bernice A. King, as it’s the most external way to promote the legacy of her father, Martin Luther King Jr., and mother, Coretta Scott King. “It’s gotten to the place now where it’s kind of second nature,” King said. “I was obviously born into this and raised in it. And I don’t know any other life. I don’t know how to wake up and not be the daughter of these great people because what they lived and what they taught is so essential.” Read our full interview with @berniceaking at the link in our bio.
As Atlanta prepares to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Dr. Bernice King, CEO of the King Center, stopped by the GPB Talk Studio. February is Black History Month. At MPB, we are digging into our archives to find pieces that celebrate African Americans who have made our state, country, and society better as a whole. Today, we celebrate Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who came to our studios in 1973 for an interview with "Blacklife" to discuss her husband's legacy, The King Center, and the future of nonviolent social change. God uses music in powerful ways. A few months ago, @thekingcenter asked @commonhymnal to write a song for their annual “Be Love” event. When they saw that MLK Day coincided with the Presidential inauguration, they rushed the recording so that they could release it today, before all the events coming up in order to shine a spotlight on Dr. King’s message of love and justice in this season where meanness, bullying, vengeance, racism and division seem to be getting center stage. They are hoping to drown some of that out with this song. And I’m proud to share it. Please listen to the full song and share it with your communities, support Common Hymnal, and follow The King Center as they continue in the work of building the Beloved Community. #CommonHymnal #BeLove #TheKingCenter #MLK #BelovedCommunity
