At first glance, we are faced with an almost comical figure — a creature resembling a bird, seated on a wheeled structure. Its body is massive, covered in texture — almost feathers, almost scales. It sits cross-legged, as if waiting. This is a work by Kris Lemsalu, Pope of Hope (2026). The title sounds almost solemn. Almost absurd. A pope of hope. As if hope required an institution. A figure. A structure of authority. The body is still. Yet beneath it — wheels. As if this being could move. But does not. Or no longer knows where to go. You see a bird. I see an institution of hope. Because this is not simply a figure. It is a role. A figure meant to hold something greater than itself. You see a creature. I see a function. The function of believing. The function of holding. The function of representing what cannot be held directly. And here, a tension appears. The body is heavy. Almost overloaded. It does not look light, like a bird. It does not look free. You see a bird. I see weight. The weight of expectation. The weight of symbolism. The weight of needing to be the one who carries hope. And here, an almost painful question emerges: Can hope be institutionalized?

FIVE ARTIST FRIDAY | Part 82 . Sometimes what we call monstrous is only the unfamiliar demanding to be seen. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the beauty that lives at the edges of things, the hybrid, the in-between, the creatures and bodies that refuse to fit into the safe, well-lit categories popular culture tries to give them. This week’s artists craft forms that are both feral and exquisite, as if undoing the old divisions between beauty and horror, care and chaos. Their work suggests that strangeness is not something to fear, but a language the world has been speaking all along. Here are this weeks artists: Leilah Babirye @babiryesculptor (Uganda): Sculptures from wood, metal, discarded materials, queer bodies that carry defiance and grace in equal measure. Sarah Zapata (Peru US) @sylk_z : Textile works spilling colour and labour, unspooling comfort into questions of gender, faith, and home. Kris Lemsalu (Estonia Austria) #krislemsalu: Ceramic installations where the absurd and sacred collide, as if myths sprouted from volcanic ground. Edgar Calel (Maya Kaqchikel, Guatemala) @calel_edgar : Performance and installation tying ritual, land, and memory into works that feel both ancient and newly breathing. Jason Villegas (US) j.villegas77 : Playful yet uncanny creatures stitched, painted, assembled, joy and satire at the edge of monstrosity. Follow along if you want to discover more artists each Friday. Share this with someone who loves art that surprises and unsettles. And, as always… Have a great weekend! ✌️ . #art #contemporaryart #fiveartistfriday
