SPEECH DELAY IN 2 YRS OLD
Hi, I’m Bisma, a Pediatric speech language therapist, specialised in early intervention, autism, late talkers.
⁉️How to know if your 2 year old has a speech delay?
Here are some key points to refer:
❌Child is only using gestures and has difficulty with speech imitation.
❌Child has difficulty understanding 1 step commands or statements.
❌ Child doesn’t respond to their name or seems to be in their own world.
❌Previous history of ear infections or developmental delays.
Most of the queries in my DMs are about when should we be concerned it’s a speech delay and show a speech language therapist?
Short answer: earlier the better
Long answer: If your child has all the above difficulties as per his age, you MUST NOT WAIT and consult a speech language therapist.
Even when doctors say wait and watch? YES!!
I don’t believe in the wait and watch paradigm and honestly it does more harm than good. More about it in the next reel.
Speech therapy is not a medicinal treatment. It focuses on helping you understand what is difficult for your child, at what level your child currently is and how you can help support their language and communication.
Trust me, my purpose of sharing this is so that children receive help earlier and progress faster. Therapy is expensive, YES and it’s a lot of hard work on the therapist and parents part. The earlier we identify the delay the lesser are the chances for the child to be under prolonged care of a speech language therapist.
Comment “speech-delay” for the red flags checklist

When a 2-year-old understands everything but isn’t talking yet, it’s not defiance or stubbornness.
It usually means the thinking brain is ready, but the speaking system isn’t fully organised yet.
This can happen due to:
• difficulty planning speech (motor planning)
• low confidence using words
• sensory processing differences
• being understood without needing to speak
• expressive language delay
The most important thing to know?
👉 This stage responds extremely well to the right support.
Forcing words, asking repeated questions, or waiting it out often increases frustration instead of speech.
What actually helps:
• following your child’s lead
• modeling simple, functional words
• reducing pressure to “perform”
• strengthening communication through play
• supporting regulation before speech
With early, play-based speech support, many children begin using words naturally and joyfully 💬✨
If this sounds like your child, you’re not late — you’re right on time 🤍

How many real conversations does your child get daily?
This worked for us — not universal advice.
Always rule out medical concerns.”

Her gestalt processing language development journey has been incredible to watch. There is not a single day I take her spoken communication for granted.
It isn’t always this good. When she’s dysregulated, all bets are off. Her stories can be hard to follow, and it can still be hard for her to explain what she needs. But the fact that she talks this well ever is still amazing to me.
Spoken communication is an incredibly complex process. Taking in information and processing it, coming up with words to say in response to that information, and then coordinating the jaw and tongue movements required to say all the words is serious mental and physical gymnastics! It’s no wonder that’s often the first skill to go when someone is at all under stress, dysregulated, or not operating at peak levels. (It happens to *everyone*, not just autistic kids or adults!) It’s no wonder some autistic individuals are never able to communicate through spoken words at all!
*** And being able to communicate thoughts and feelings in spoken words is not at all the same thing as having thoughts and feelings. ***
There are many reasons why autistic kids may be non speaking. In Abby’s case, she was just a very late talker who is also a gestalt language processor and it took her a little while to get going.
Some gestalt processors will take far longer than Abby did and some will get there far quicker. Some will follow such a similar timeline as their peers that no one will realize they are gestalt processors!
For some autistic kids, spoken communication may never come. They may always depended on some form of AAC to be able to express their thoughts. Doesn’t make them any less intelligent or inherently valuable and wonderful human beings.
If you are raising or working with a child who hasn’t found spoken words yet or might struggle with them, please remember to be patient and always presume competence! Keep modeling language. Keep meeting them where they are. ❤️

💬 GLP vs Late Talker — why I model differently!
Every child learns language in their own way 💛
✨ For late talkers, I might ask simple questions or give two choices (“ball or bubbles?”) to encourage spontaneous words.
🧠 For gestalt language processors (GLPs), I skip questions and verbal choices — because they often repeat them as a whole chunk instead of creating new language.
That’s why you’ll hear me model phrases like “Let’s go!” or “It’s a ball!” instead of “What is it?”
Every child’s journey is unique — and so is how we support them 💛

[email protected] ✨ This simple tip may help your little one imitate more words!
You can use this tip with or without toys; baby dolls just happen to be one of my favorite toys for building language.
✨ Did you know that children generally imitate actions before they imitate words? We can pair the two together to help increase imitation of sounds and words.
1️⃣ Take an action that your child can imitate (in this case, patting the baby on the back)
2️⃣ Pair it with a fun sound or word
3️⃣ Model the action with the sound/word and then pause to see if your child will take a turn
✨ Remember that repetition is key. It may not happen right away, but keep modeling and pausing throughout play and your little one might surprise you!
Will you give it a try? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️

Last year, I made a post about something simple but very real how my son did better in nigeria with speech after 2 months.
At 1:6year
I didn’t expect that post to shake so many mothers. But it did.
And since then, several mums took that same step. Some travelled home for a short break.
Some went for Christmas. Some stayed for a few weeks.
And now… five different mothers have messaged me this year with updates that honestly gave me chills.
Here are some of their testimonies:
We stayed in Nigeria for 6 weeks. He came back saying new words we had never heard.”
My daughter started joining two words together. She wasn’t doing that before.”
“My mum does not keep quiet here. Everybody talks to him. Now he answers and even imitates.”
“Just one month in Lagos and my son is repeating everything. I’m shocked.”
“I didn’t change anything except environment. Now my daughter responds anytime someone calls her.”
These are five different families.Different ages.Different countries.
Different stories. But one thing was the same the environment changed.
Let’s be honest.
Diaspora homes are peaceful, but sometimes too quiet for a child who needs constant language exposure.
When these children landed in Nigeria, everything shifted:Grandma talking.
Aunties correcting.Cousins dragging toys and expecting answers.Neighbours greeting.
Church noise.Street noise.
Market noise.
It’s not chaos.It’s stimulation.
It’s language everywhere.Children learn to talk from real people not cartoons, not background noise, not silence.
And for some children, that burst of human interaction wakes up the brain.
I am NOT saying travelling will solve every speech delay. Not every child just needs noise. Some children need structured therapy, hearing checks, developmental support, and feeding help.
But these five mums showed me something important:
Some children improve when the environment becomes richer, louder, more interactive, and more connected.

if it’s feeding, chewing, oral strengthening, environment change, screen reduction, or stimulation techniques

Your baby might be communicating more than you think! 🤍
Before words show up, babies use their hands, bodies, and faces to tell us what they want, notice, and understand.
Gestures aren’t just cute— they’re foundational for language
One important milestone we look for is around 16 gestures by 16 months. Gestures show that language is developing under the surface — even before words arrive.
Pointing, waving, showing, reaching, shaking their head, lifting arms to be picked up… it all counts and it’s all very important✨
If your little one isn’t using many words yet, start by noticing their gestures and working on gaining some new ones— that’s where communication often begins

Comment “LIST” and I’ll send you a list of the top 100 words I target with toddlers in speech therapy! You can print it out, put it on your fridge, and keep track of your child’s language development! Some kids make progress really quickly, and others take a lot more time. The important thing is that each child is getting the support they need, then we let them develop at their own pace ❤️ #speechtherapy #parenting #milestones #signlanguage #toddler #latetalker #speechdelay
👋 Waving - babies typically start waving around 9 months of age.
To teach baby how to wave….you need to model it throughout your day!
🙈This peekaboo game is a great way to model waving. Your baby will be engaged and will love watching you wave to them when you pop up to say hello.
Around 7-8 months babies start to imitate actions like waving (which you can see Baby A do in this video). They then learn the social meaning behind waving and learn to do this when saying hi or bye ☺️
Remember you can start playing this game and model waving well before your baby is 7-9 months old (ie before they can copy the action).
