Have you ever seen a leucistic bird? This leucistic female Northern Cardinal was spotted this week in Snyder, New York, by @BuffaloAudubon’s Director of Development Lynn Westcott! ✨
Leucism is a genetic condition that prevents pigments from reaching some—or sometimes all—of a bird’s feathers. So how can we tell this cardinal is a female? Our field editor Kenn Kaufman (@kennkaufmanart) says that if you ever find a “white” cardinal that looks like this, it’s most likely a female.
That’s because leucism normally affects melanin, the pigment that produces most black, brown, gray, and buff in feathers, while having no impact on the carotenoid pigments that produce red and yellow in feathers. So on this female Northern Cardinal, the areas that should be brown or buff are replaced with white, while the crest, wings, and tail have their normal amounts of red. Male Northern Cardinals affected by the normal form of leucism would likely have their black face mask replaced with white.
In Canada, a man filmed an extremely rare white moose in the forest — not AI, but a real animal affected by leucism.
Leucism is a rare genetic mutation that makes the animal’s fur appear pale while the eyes remain their natural color — unlike albinism. Only a few hundred white moose are believed to exist worldwide. Found in Canada, the United States, and Scandinavia, seeing one in the wild is an extraordinary and unforgettable moment.

A leucistic Iberian lynx was recently spotted in Spain the first ever recorded in the wild. With fewer than 2,000 left, this medium-sized wild cat is known for its short tail, tufted ears, and spotted coat. The Iberian lynx is one of the rarest feline species in the world and is rarely seen in its natural habitat. Once critically endangered in the early 2000s, its population is now gradually increasing thanks to ongoing conservation programs.

Leucistic oceanic manta ray is an incredibly rare and visually stunning creature. 💎💎💎

Leucism is a condition where there is a partial loss of pigmentation in an animal, resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, but unlike albinism, it does not affect the eyes.
.

.
Manta rays are captivating creatures known for their graceful movements and size.
While often recognized for their black and white coloration, they exhibit significant diversity in appearance, varying within and among populations.
These color morphs may range from subtle changes in hue to more pronounced patterns, potentially reflecting adaptations to their environments and social interactions.

There are three main colour forms that have been documented:
1- Chevron
2- Melanistic
3- Leucistic

Moths are on the menu for the wild caught White Copperheads!
The two whiteys are cruising up on 3 years old now, crazy how time flies isn’t it!!! They should be able to breed sooner than later now!!!
The area where these are found has relatively small copperheads compared to the rest of the United States, where I’ve seen these snakes other populations! You’re a hard pressed to find an animal over 3 feet down here in Texas, but back on the east coast in New England you could regularly find them over 4 feet in length!
These have been grown almost virtually on a natural prey diet with the occasional treat or novelty prey item like a soft fur rat or quail, otherwise it’s been bugs, lizards and frogs/tads for food!
The area these were found is primarily a pine oak forest and I’ve been feeding them what they’d hunt naturally in the area!!! “I used to live near their collection site and have had many days and nights out in the field to know what the population was mostly feeding on”

🦈 Came across a Leucistic Horn Shark while diving at sunset!
🧬 Leucism is a rare genetic condition that affects many different species of animals, where there is a partial loss of pigmentation, causing them to appear patchy. Think of it as on the spectrum of albinism, but not a total lack of melanin.
🐍 I only knew what this was when I saw it because of my time at the Living Coast, where there is a quite beautiful Leucistic Snake!

How to stand out in a crowd of Cacklers
Smaller, noisier and faster than their larger cousins, Canada geese, Cackling geese are tundra breeders that like to spend their winters in the Willamette Valley and points south. Though they look suspiciously like mini-me versions of Canada geese, they are unique in many ways, including having a lower occurrence of leucism than Canada geese.
Leucism is a genetic condition that causes partial pigment loss, in this case, in the feathers. Generally, in birds, the lack of melanin in feathers might cause some feather degradation, and a lighter coloration might make them more visible to predators, but the condition isn’t otherwise harmful.

Have been having a pretty cool visitor lately 👀 A leucistic American Goldfinch! Almost looks more like a canary if you just give the feeders a quick glance. #birds #birding #leucism #badgerlandbirding
The World’s Only Golden Penguin Stuns Scientists and Nature Lovers Alike
A moment of pure wonder unfolded on South Georgia Island when wildlife photographer Yves Adams captured what looked like a creature from a dream — a golden king penguin shining brightly among a colony of over 120,000 black-and-white penguins. The breathtaking sight, confirmed by National Geographic and Smithsonian Magazine, is believed to be one of the rarest natural occurrences ever recorded.
At first, Adams thought the glowing bird was a reflection of the sunlight — until it waddled closer, revealing feathers of creamy gold and white. Scientists later confirmed the penguin’s unusual color results from a genetic mutation called leucism, which reduces melanin pigment without affecting the eyes or skin. Unlike albinism, leucism creates selective color loss, giving this penguin its stunning golden hue. Experts estimate the odds of such a mutation in king penguins at less than one in a million.
While its dazzling coat makes it a global sensation, it could also make survival more difficult, as darker feathers help penguins camouflage from predators like seals and orcas. Yet this golden penguin stands tall — a living testament to nature’s unpredictability, resilience, and beauty.
In a world filled with repetition, this bird reminds us that true magic lies in rarity and courage to stand out.

It looks like a spirit. But it is real. 🦌✨
This is the legendary White Stag.
Seeing one in the wild is one of the rarest events in nature. Biologists estimate the odds are only about 1 in 30,000.
They are not always albinos. Many of them have a condition called Leucism, which turns their fur white but leaves their eyes dark—giving them a ghostly, intelligent look.
In ancient Celtic and Arthurian folklore, the White Stag wasn't just an animal. It was a messenger from the "Otherworld."
To see one was a sign that a great change was coming to your life.
It is beautiful, but it is also a target. Its bright coat makes it impossible to hide from predators.
It survives against all odds.
If you saw one, would you follow it? 👇
