More than 120 wild macaws live here together! 🦜😍 This place is called Buraco das Araras: the Macaw Sinkhole. Located near Bonito and close to the South Pantanal, this spectacular geological formation is home to more than sixty breeding pairs of Red-and-green Macaws. From time to time, Blue-and-yellow Macaws and even the majestic Hyacinth Macaw can also be seen here! But this giant sandstone sinkhole is much more than a nesting site. The macaws use it as a natural arena for social interactions and courtship displays. Males show off their vibrant plumage, perform aerial acrobatics, and communicate through loud calls that echo dramatically off the cliffs. These displays help strengthen pair bonds and establish social connections within the colony 🫶 The vertical walls also provide ideal nesting cavities, offering protection from predators and shelter from harsh weather conditions. In many ways, Buraco das Araras is a grand meeting hall for macaws, a place to socialize, communicate, court and raise their young. Funny fact: there is a caiman and a 6m long green anaconda living at the bottom of the sinkhole, feeding on animals unfortunate enough to fall from the borders of the hole. The last time any one went down there was in 2007!! One of Brazil’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles that you can discover with us @jaguarwildlife_tours 🦜❤️ Filmed and edited by @francois_humbert_photography for @jaguarwildlife_tours with @helenawildlifephotography 🔥

Nigel says Hello! Blue-and-yellow macaws are great mimics, often repeating words they hear frequently. You should make plans to visit us soon so you can say hello to him, too! Remember, we're open daily 9am to 6pm

Our male sibling green-winged macaws, Roberto and Blanco, are Zoo veterans! At age 32, they have lived the majority of their lives here, and today they celebrated their big day with fruit kabobs and a lot of attention. Green-winged macaws are big on personality – and size! And they have a life expectancy of between 60-65 years. Happy Birthday you two! #sfzoo #macaw #birthday

This is, without a doubt, one of the most difficult shots I made this season: tracking two Red-and-green Macaws handheld while they were flying together. Together with @kritiwaliaphotography , we spent two days photographing at Buraco das Araras, Brazil, an incredible place that has quickly become one of my favorite locations for bird-in-flight photography. Speed, coordination, and only a few seconds to get the shot. Thanks @scapinidaiani for be our guide . . . #macaw #brazil #video #alphasony_latin #photowildlifetours
