Mawsmai Cave is a stunning limestone cave near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, a state in North-East India. The Khasi Hills, partly made up of limestone, form numerous caves due to the area’s heavy rainfall. Among over 200 caves, Mawsmai Cave is relatively short at about 250 meters, richly adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and gleaming calcite crystals.
Located about 6 km from Cherrapunji, known as the wettest place on Earth, Mawsmai Cave is a major tourist attraction. Though the cave extends further, tourists can only explore 150 meters of it. These are the only caves in the state that are well-lit, making exploration easy without a guide. The wide entrance narrows as you proceed, revealing diverse flora and fauna.
If you seek a change from the usual greenery and mountain peaks on your trip to Cherrapunji, Mawsmai Cave is a must-visit destination.

Mawsmai Cave in Meghalaya feels like stepping into a fantasy movie. The Khasi tribe believes this ancient cave was once home to spirits, and even today, some locals say they hear strange noises from inside during the night.
Formed over millions of years, nature slowly carved this masterpiece by dripping rainwater through limestone rocks, creating stunning formations that make the cave one of Meghalaya’s most iconic spots.
The narrow passages, echo of dripping water, darkness, flying bats, and cool air make the experience both thrilling and magical. Though the cave is only around 150 meters long and has electric bulbs inside, claustrophobic people might still find it challenging.
But the most beautiful moment is when sunlight enters through the openings above and the entire cave glows golden - a sight that feels unreal, like nature’s own hidden kingdom beneath the earth.

"✨ Meghalaya is home to some amazing cave systems and Mawsmai Cave is one of the most popular caves there (and the only cave in Meghalaya that’s well lit from inside).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨ These limestone caves are quite intricate however only 150m is open to public. The walk through the caves is quite an adventure, and involves crawling through narrow sections. If you’re looking for an easier cave to walk through, I’m told Arwah Caves are relatively easier, and in the same area.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨ How to get there: They’re located around 4-5 kms from the main Sohra market...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨ They’re open from 9:30-5:30 PM...The best time to visit is usually post monsoon so you can also see wet spots within the cave, however we visited in March and found it quite amazing then too!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don’t see too many people exploring caves in Meghalaya but they’re so worth visiting! 💛💛"
