What a treat it has been to collaborate with @jonsideriadis on embellishments for his Astromythos Book Two painting. If D&D is your thing these books are a treasure trove and worth diving into. I'll add more info on them in my stories. I met Jon this year at GenCon and his art immediately caught my eye, the more we got to chatting it became clear we had to do something together. Honestly it's a privilege to contribute a little to this piece and I just can't wait to see how it's going to turn out. This has been the only piece I've chased in steel so far this year and feeling it under hand again feels like coming home. And to get to do it with such a delicious puzzle as hands has been a delightful challenge. I haven't sat down with figurative work like this for too long and it's rekindled an old embers in my imagination. With low relief like this every detail still needs to come through and appear as deep as if it was a full 3d sculpture. Less volume does not mean less work, in many ways it can be more challenging than full 3d sculpture as you have to force shadows with design or texture rather than relying on volume. It's been a maze I've relished finding my way to the end of. Working on another repoussè piece today! Repoussè is an ancient metal forming technique that allows me to sculpt with 24 gauge sterling silver sheet, which is pretty thin. Here I’m working on the initial puffing out of my form, working from the back and using a block of plasticine clay to support the silver. Not shown is all the annealing in between. Chasing and repousse is a means to create relief in sheets of softer metal such as silver or copper. Artists may easily use a dozen or more different chasing tools to form different kinds of textures and intricacy in the metal’s surface. The process is done on a bowl of pitch which provides the right balance of give and resistance. The design possibilities are endless. We have a set of Liza Nechamkin’s comprehensive chasing tools and hammers in our “Tools” exhibition . My dead salmon lives! This is about half way done, it's my "inbetween projects" build. So progress is slow as I don't get to work on it in big bursts but I'm loving the way it's discolouring a little from just a kiss of rust where it's been heated. It's been salmon season for a while where I live and the entire river rejoices in the bounty the salmon bring with them. This smelly beautiful seasonal gift is a time of year I always look forward to. The cycle it represents, the explosion of life in the area, I find it very inspirational and wanted to do this piece last year but didn't have the time. I still don't 😂 but ya can't wait for things to be perfect, so I'll chip away at it and maybe I'll have it done before the salmon stop running. Through M.des craft cluster visit, we made our students elucidate into the colorful crafts of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. All students reasoned the working of the cluster, inside out by making themselves study the whole system. Resulting into system identification, causal loop, identifying sustainable and unsustainable practices within the cluster. Working and learning alongside the artisans and craftsmen of crafts like Gulabi Meenakari, Wood Lacquer Toys, Metal Repousse, Black Pottery, Soft Stone Jali Work etc. was/is an illuminating experience not just for the young designers but also co learning alongside artisans made them understand things from sustainable point of view, a sustainable system as a whole.
