Moonsnails eat clams by licking a hole through their shell and can burrow in the sand! If you ever find these plastic like structures on the beach don’t throw them away! The moonsnails make them out of sand, mucus, and their eggs #tidepools #tidepooling #moonsnail #oceanfacts
We’re counting down to World Oceans Day on June 8 with a weekly profile of our marine friends. Let’s meet the moon snail, a predatory sea snail that lives in the waters off Parksville Qualicum Beach. Four fascinating facts: 1. Moon snails use their large foot to engulf and suffocate prey. 2. They drill into clam shells with their rasping tongue and acid, then liquify the prey and slurp it up. 3. After feeding, they can double in size. 4. You might also see their unique egg collars on the beach, a sign of their hidden presence. Moon snails play a crucial role in marine ecosystems. Through their predatory and burrowing activities, they regulate bivalve populations and enhance seabed health. Their environmental interaction helps maintain ecological balance and nutrient cycling in coastal waters. To learn more about the marine life off the coast of Parksville Qualicum Beach, we highly recommend visiting @viudeepbay - Deep Bay Marine Field Station. The station will be open from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily for the summer season from the May long weekend (May 17) until the September long weekend. #mypqb #worldoceansday #moonsnail

Don’t throw these out, they’re babies! Moon snails lay their eggs in collars, which look similar to the end of plungers 🪠, but they’re in fact tiny little baby marine snails. These sandy, spiral-shaped structures are created as the snail burrows into the sand and forms a gelatinous, spiral-shaped collar around its shell, depositing thousands of eggs. This collar then hardens into a sand-mucus matrix, providing protection and a stable environment for the developing embryos. Many people have mistaken these plunger/looking egg collars for garbage or trash and dispose of them in nearby garbage bins. Please leave these at the beach so these baby moon snails can grow! #marinebiology #moonsnail #ocean #naturalist #lowtide

This is a steinkern fossil, a cast formed when sediment filled a snail’s shell, hardened, and the shell itself dissolved away. What remains is the inner spiral, preserved in stone. Shown here with a present-day moon snail, you can see how nature repeats its patterns, millions of years apart. 🌊🐚🌀 . #steinkernfossil #fossil #fossils #steinkernfossil #marinebiology #seasnail #beachcombing #ancient #beachfinds #explorecalifornia #fossilhunting #fossilhunter #fossilfinds #treasurehunting #natura #naturaleza #nature #naturephotography #explorenature #californialove #shells #shelling #moonsnail #moonshell #marinescience #marineanimals #coastalliving
