Cheers! 🥂 Spirits, and glasses, are raised in ‘The Drinking Song’ from Verdi’s opera La traviata, sung sublimely by baritenor Michael Spyres and soprano Danielle de Niese at Classic FM Live, together with the chorus and orchestra of English National Opera. Verdi just misses out on the Top 200 in this year’s Classic FM Hall of Fame, falling 51 places to his lowest ever position in chart history. 📻 The Classic FM Hall of Fame 2026 | Friday 3 to Monday 6 April, 9am-9pm

W.A. Mozart - The Marrige of Figaro

Maestro Monday! In “1984 The Opera,” one of the most pivotal moments arrives when O’Brien invites Winston and Julia to meet him at his apartment. For Winston, it feels like hope. At last, someone powerful who might share his secret resistance to the Party and the ever watching presence of Big Brother. But in the world imagined by George Orwell, nothing is ever quite what it seems. In this video, composer and Maestro Maazel discusses this scene and the scene thereafter, and plays excerpts from the music he wrote for it, revealing how the score builds tension beneath the surface of what appears to be moments of trust and love. What seems like an opening toward freedom will ultimately lead Winston and Julia deeper into the Party’s trap. It is a powerful glimpse into how Maestro used music to heighten the psychological drama at the heart of the story. We’re thrilled to bring “1984 The Opera” back to the stage in live performances of the music, on April 12 at the Castleton Festival.
