We cannot emphasise enough that catastrophic injuries in racing are not accidents. They are a direct result of the horse being pushed too far, too early, and too fast. 5yo Chorlton Lane was killed this Saturday at Caulfield, VIC, after his front leg snapped in half during the race. He started racing when he was only two years old and had already won over $700,000 for his owners. Please say #nuptothecup this spring racing carnival. #horseracingkills.

Trigger Warning ⚠️ Everyday at Freedom Hill Sanctuary we care for the survivors of the horse racing industry. Survivors because we offered them sanctuary from the knackeries to which they were all destined. So we live the truth everday, that race horses are only loved when they are winning. Please remember this truth on Melbourne Cup day. Turn your back to the track. Don’t bet on cruelty because the cruelty will always win. #horseracingkills #nuptothecup #dontbetoncruelty #walkthegentleway

The horse racing industry projects a facade of glamour, however, more people are becoming aware of the dark side of horse racing. Here are five facts you might not know:
🐴Thoroughbred foals can be separated from their Mothers at just six months to commence training. This early training makes them more appealing to bidders at the yearling sales. In the wild, foals stay with their mothers until they are at least two years old.

🐴 Early training of horses in the racing industry puts tremendous stress on their developing bodies. Young horses have immature skeletal frames prone to injuries, including fractures. Many horses suffer injuries well before their first race, which can be life-threatening.

🐴 Most people would consider whipping an animal an act of cruelty, and they would be correct. Despite this, whips are commonly and legally used in horse racing. Indeed, if a person inflicted the same treatment on a horse outside of a racetrack, the person responsible could be prosecuted under current animal cruelty legislation (POCTA). Yet this legalised cruelty is overlooked in horse racing.

🐴 “Wastage” describes the systematic and widespread slaughter of horses in the racing industry. Each year, at least 10,000 unwanted horses from the racing industry, of all ages and past levels of success, are being routinely sent to Australian slaughterhouses to be exported as meat for human consumption or to knackeries to be killed for pet food.

🐴 In addition to the ‘wastage’ issue, at least one-third of foals born into the Australian thoroughbred racing industry don’t make the track. Current rules allow foals deemed unsuitable for racing to be disposed of without being accounted for.

Although public awareness of the issues is growing, we still need to do so much more. At the very least, horses deserve respect and kindness, to be treated as the individual sentient beings they are, rather than as being here for our entertainment. Don’t support an industry that doesn’t respect horses. Say Nup to the Cup. #littleoaksanctuary #nuptothecup #horseracingkills

Dolly is one of the lucky ones. It’s time we see non-human animals for who they are, not what we can gain from them. 💕 Love horses, not racing. #NupToTheCup Thanks to Brightside Farm Sanctuary in Tasmania for sharing beautiful Dolly’s story with us! (Via @animalsaustralia
