#Kiwifarming is rapidly transforming the rural economy of Senapati district in Manipur, emerging as a profitable alternative to traditional #crops. With favorable #climatic conditions and growing demand for organic produce, more farmers are adopting kiwi #cultivation, significantly improving incomes. The region is #gaining recognition as a key kiwi-producing hub, with production expanding across multiple villages. However, the lack of coldstorage infrastructure remains a major challenge, leading to postharvest losses, especially during disruptions like landslides. Farmers are also seeking government support for inputs such as fencing and farm infrastructure. As the sector continues to grow, targeted investments and policy support could unlock its full potential and strengthen livelihoods in the region.

The recent India-US trade deal involves significant changes to import duties that directly impact apple growers in regions like Shopian and sopore Our land is the crown of India’s horticulture, and our hard work sustains the backbone of Kashmir’s economy. Today, I want to speak to you about a significant development the trade agreement between India and the United States. Many of you are hearing that American apples will now flood our markets at lower prices because of reduced tariffs. It is true that the government has lowered the import duty on US apples from 50% to 25%. There are even concerns about zero-duty imports in the future. This naturally brings worry to every orchardist from Shopian to Sopore. We fear that cheaper, branded apples from across the ocean might push our local produce out of the market. … However, we must also understand the safeguards being discussed. The government has set a Minimum Import Price of ₹80 per kg. This means no American apple can enter our country for less than that price. When you add the 25% duty, their price should stay around ₹100 per kg, which is meant to keep our Kashmiri apples competitive. But we know the reality of the market. We know the pressure of rising costs and the challenges of cold storage. Our demand to the government is clear our livelihoods must not be the price of international trade. While the deal aims to help Indian exports like textiles and tech, it must not leave our farmers behind. … We call for continued protection, better infrastructure, and support so that the ‘Apple Bowl of Kashmir’ remains strong. Our apples are the best in the world, and with the right support no competition can take away the sweetness of Shopian’s soil. Stay informed, stay united, and let us ensure our voices are heard in the halls of power.
