Celadon Inlaid Ewer with Peony and Chrysanthemum Floral Sprays (Part 3) - Finishing the Jeoljimun Inlay [청자 상감 모란국화절지문 주자 작업 (Part 3) - 절지문 상감 작업 마무리] This is a look into the recreation process based on 12th-13th century Goryeo celadon ewer artifacts that utilize the inlay technique. Following the application of black slip into the carved 'Jeoljimun' (floral spray motif) on the melon-shaped body characteristic of Goryeo celadon, this stage focuses on scraping away the excess clay on the surface to finalize the process. 'Jeoljimun' is a motif that omits the plant's roots and background, capturing only a 'single cut stem' with blooming flowers. Characteristically, instead of filling the entire surface, a single independent spray is placed within each section of the vessel. The concise, upward-reaching line of the stem, revealed through the scraping process, along with the ample negative space around it, visually accentuates the three-dimensional volume of the previously completed white inlaid blossoms. Once completed, the pieces will be finished in Hwasimdoyo's wood-fired kiln, undergoing 2 nights and 3 days of bisque firing followed by 5 nights and 6 days of glaze firing. A legacy passed down through six generations, inherited from my master. 12~13세기 상감기법을 사용한 고려청자 주전자 유물들을 바탕으로 재현 작업을 진행 중인 모습입니다. 고려청자 특유의 유려한 선을 살려 완성한 입체적인 과형(과일 형태) 몸통 위에 앞서 조각한 '절지문' 에 흑토를 채워 넣었습니다. 이번 과정에서는 표면에 남은 흑토를 정교하게 긁어내어 절지문의 작업을 최종적으로 마무리합니다. '절지문'은 식물의 뿌리나 주변 배경을 생략하고, 꽃이 피어난 '꺾어진 한 줄기의 가지'만을 단독으로 포착해 표현하는 문양입니다. 기물의 표면을 가득 채우지 않고 각 면마다 한 송이씩 독립적으로 배치되는 것이 특징입니다. 긁어내기 작업을 통해 선명하게 드러난 한 줄기의 검은 선과 그 주변의 넉넉한 여백은, 앞서 백상감으로 장식한 꽃 문양의 입체감을 시각적으로 더욱 돋보이게 합니다. 작업이 완료된 작품은 전통화심도요의 장작가마에서 2박 3일간 초벌소성, 5박 6일의 재벌소성을 거쳐 완성됩니다. 6대째 이어져 내려온 스승님께 전수받은 기술입니다. #KoreanCeramics #PotteryProcess #Craftsmanship #유물재현 #청자

Celadon Inlaid Ewer with Peony and Chrysanthemum Floral Sprays (Part 4) - Crafting the Lid and Yeonpanmun Inlay [청자 상감 모란국화절지문 주자 작업 (Part 4) - 뚜껑 작업 및 연판문 상감] This is a look into the recreation process based on 12th-13th century Goryeo celadon ewer artifacts that utilize the inlay technique. Following the completion of the melon-shaped body characteristic of Goryeo celadon, the lid is trimmed and shaped to naturally complement the vessel. The lid is then decorated with 'Yeonpanmun' (lotus petal motif), carved to wrap around the edges, using the black and white inlay technique. Additionally, a small loop is attached to the top, a feature frequently observed in Goryeo celadon ewers. This loop serves as a practical device to thread a string connecting the lid to the main body, preventing it from falling. Once completed, the pieces will be finished in Hwasimdoyo's wood-fired kiln, undergoing 2 nights and 3 days of bisque firing followed by 5 nights and 6 days of glaze firing. Celadon Inlaid Ewer Work (Part 4) - Carving the Lotus Design [청자 상감 주자 작업 (Part 4) - 연화문 조각] This is a look into the process of carving the lotus design for the recreation of the 'Celadon Inlaid Ewer with Inscription and Foliage Design (Deoksu 3431),' a masterpiece from the National Museum of Korea. This work applies the 'Reverse Inlay' technique, frequently seen in 12th-13th century Goryeo celadon. Unlike standard inlay where the motif is engraved and filled, this method involves scraping away the background clay so the design stands out. This allows the lotus to retain the natural clay color while the background is filled with white slip, creating a vivid contrast. The pattern was primarily modeled after the 'Celadon Inlaid Ewer with Lotus Scroll Design (Deoksu 3746)' in the museum's collection. Once completed, the pieces will be finished in Hwasimdoyo's wood-fired kiln, undergoing 2 nights and 3 days of bisque firing followed by 5 nights and 6 days of glaze firing. Here in South Korea, in the historic city of Gyeongju, they have discovered stunning artifacts in the giant hill graves that have been excavated over the last 100 years. Among them is this stunning saddle mud flap made of woven bamboo, hemp, ramie, birch bark, and gold, dated to the 6th century.
