Sometimes you just need to put your mental health above all else. School has been super tricky for M recently. So today we put our relationship, and his mental health first. He found a minecraft cookbook on his tablet last night, and so we spent the morning shopping for ingredients, and then made the first recipe, a Creeper milkshake. It may look a mess and chaos to the normal eye….but to my son who’s autistic, pda, adhd has everything in ‘his’ order! . Everything has a reason to be in that place to him. It’s so easy to look at our PDA’r and think they want control as this is what we see them doing trying to control everything, however their internal driver is for autonomy. The controlling is just an outward expression of that. More genuine autonomy for the child creates and communicates safety to the PDA’r which in turn is likely to see a decrease in controlling behaviour. Trust is broken when autonomy is taken away Or fawning occurs as result of rising tension and stress in the nervous system when autonomy is compromised. Looking at points through out the day where autonomy was lost will be helpful and looking at ways to fill that autonomy bucket also helpful. What kinds of controlling does your PDA’r do? When I got Ruby, I thought I was bringing home a healthy puppy. But during her first vet check-up, they heard it: a murmur in her heart. I contacted the breeder — they denied everything. “Don’t worry, she’ll grow out of it,” they said. But that wasn’t true. After several visits, scans and tests, Ruby was diagnosed with PDA – a serious heart condition, common in Dobermanns. 🫀 She needed surgery. Urgently. The operation itself cost €6,000. But with medication, scans, check-ups and follow-ups, it added up to nearly €10,000. 💸 But honestly? I would do it all again. Ruby had to stay indoors for months. 🏡 No puppy school, no socializing, no normal start to life. She missed out on so much — but she never gave up. And neither did I. Today, she’s almost 2 years old. ✨ Happy, healthy, and still plays like a puppy. 🐶 She’s my miracle girl. ♥️ If I hadn’t trusted my gut and had her heart checked, she wouldn’t be here today.
