Phil Mickelson once revealed that great wedge play has very little to do with the swing itself.

According to Mickelson, a wedge that flies 120 yards in the afternoon might come up 5–10 yards short in the morning.

The fix is rolling the face slightly to get the shaft and butt of the club aligned down the line right away, which keeps the swing on plane and the strike pure.
