A Fresh Start — Darren’s Story In 2014, Darren Johnson left Louisiana for Houston after the passing of his mother. The grief and painful memories were too heavy to carry, and he hoped Texas would offer him a fresh start. But that fresh start came with challenges. Darren soon found himself experiencing homelessness. For more than 10 years, he has lived with HIV, and in 2023 he received devastating news — he was diagnosed with terminal lung and throat cancer. Despite everything he was facing, Darren chose to give back. For three years, he faithfully volunteered at The Hope Center. His resilience and heart for service never wavered. It was there at The Hope Center Social that Social Services Director, John Basel, completed a Housing Assessment that would change Darren’s life. That assessment led to placement in Harmony House’s **New Beginnings Program**, a Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program designed to assist chronically homeless individuals living with disabilities. Soon after, Darren was handed the keys to his own fully furnished apartment — a safe place to call home. Through the wraparound services provided in PSH, Darren received the support he needed to focus on his health. His Case Manager and Healthcare Navigator worked together to ensure he had transportation — whether bus passes or direct rides — to attend medical appointments. They helped schedule visits, coordinate treatment, and even assisted him in learning how to properly care for and maintain his trach. Because of stable housing, consistent medical care, and a strong support system, Darren’s life began to change. Today, Darren gives credit to Harmony House for saving his life. He shares that he is miraculously healed and now cancer-free. In just two weeks, he will have his trach removed — the final physical reminder of all he has endured. When asked if he had anything to say to those who helped him, Darren became emotional and simply said: “Thank you for helping me and giving me a chance.” -Shared with permission of Mr. Johnson #homelessstories #harmonyhousehtx #overcomeobstacles #houstonhtx #homelessness #permanentsupportivehousing
The art of doing it together. A month and a half ago, we opened the doors of our Drop-In Center for young people ages 18–24 experiencing homelessness. Since then, we’ve seen what’s possible when a community shows up with care, dignity, and support. Together, we are creating a space of hope, connection, and new beginnings. Thank you to everyone walking this journey with us. 💙 #communitysupport #samufirstresponse #youth

7 years. One powerful mission. 🤍 We’ve had the privilege of serving on the board of Journey Home an organization leading the way in ending homelessness across the Capital Region. Through collaboration with service providers, government agencies, businesses, and local communities, Journey Home is creating lasting, systemic change and we’re so grateful to be part of that journey. This experience has shaped us, inspired us, and reminded us that real impact happens when people come together with purpose. #JourneyHome #CommunityMatters #EndHomelessness #Leadership #Impact Gratitude ServeWithPurpose
Addressing homelessness demands urgency, compassion, and real solutions. That’s what I saw in our community this weekend, as 287 walkers, 44 teams, 36 sponsors, and 65 volunteers stepped into the cold to support our neighbours living unhoused. I joined Haven on the Queensway for the Coldest Night of the Year — a nationwide effort to end homelessness. Thank you to Ben Lee, Aretha Khaloo, Roger Berg, and the entire Haven team for organizing and leading with heart. For those of us walking, the cold was temporary. For people sleeping outside, it’s constant. Together, we can build a community where no one has to spend the coldest night of the year without a home.

They didn’t just need housing. They needed to be seen. We celebrate the moment someone gets keys—and we should. But what we don’t always talk about… is what comes next. The quiet. The grief. The fear of being alone after surviving in community. Because leaving homelessness isn’t just a transition into housing— it’s a transition out of a way of surviving, a way of belonging, a way of being known. Affordable housing matters. It is one of the leading causes of homelessness. But if we stop there, we miss something essential. Healing happens in relationship. Stability is sustained in community. And long-term exits from homelessness are rooted in belonging. At PDX Saints Love, we don’t just walk people into housing—we walk with them toward wholeness. Because love looks like staying. Like knowing someone’s name. Like showing up again and again until they remember they matter. This is what it means to build a world where no one is left behind. ✨ A Day of Hope, Smiles, and Community Impact ✨ Recently, Hope 4 Humanity US Inc. had the privilege of hosting a Hope 4 Community In-Kind Donation Event at Solomon’s Temple Foundation Women & Children’s Shelter through our partnership with the Good360 Donation Program. Because of this incredible program, we were able to distribute amazing donated items sourced from major companies like Amazon and other national brands directly to women and children in need. The smiles, gratitude, and joy we witnessed that day are exactly why we do this work. Seeing families receive essential items and knowing that those small moments can restore dignity, encouragement, and hope is always worth it. ❤️ At Hope 4 Humanity, our mission is to strengthen communities by ensuring that individuals and families have access to the resources they need—not just seasonally, but throughout the entire year.
