On this day in 1987, Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” sold for a record £22.5 million at Christie’s in London. More than double the previous record, the sale reshaped the art market overnight and signaled a surge in global demand for Impressionist and Post Impressionist works. The buyer, Japanese collector Yasuo Goto, reflected the era’s booming interest in fine art. The sale took place exactly 134 years after Van Gogh’s birth, adding another layer of significance to one of the most famous auctions in history. Here’s my new friend - “Henri” - 1 of 4 paintings from the Experimental series 2023. Experimental series features three artists I either admire or “used” to find distasteful. The purpose of this series is for me to explore their world and also making them mine. Essentially diving into their aesthetics and beliefs that are all very foreign to me and see how it goes! “Henri” is inspired by Henri Rousseau - a post impressionist artist who I absolutely admire. The attention to detail he gave to each leaf, each plant in his paintings are fascinating. Although some would say his portrayals of people and perspective can seem a bit awkward at times, I find all of them to be quite genius - considering the time he was actively painting among established artists. As a pen on paper artist, this experiment was the most time consuming and frustrating. I wasn’t able to control the brushes to have the kind of graduation Henri has - so I decided to do it my way. It was a lot of “ah! I needn’t to do these cause they’ll be ruined when I do this and I have to do them all over again!” - kind of thing. But every day. For about 3-4 weeks. I’ve learned to think 5-6 steps ahead of time when I paint, understanding priorities and order better. It was a great lesson learned. DM me if you’re interested in the original painting. Eight whopping paintings by Claude Monet cover the walls of two large oval rooms at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. Soooo beautiful since I’ve loved Monet since my teenage years when I had posters of his work all over my bedroom walls. This French museum of Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings also had a magnificent collection from artists such as Cezanne, Derain, Matisse, Renoir, Picasso, Modigliani and Soutine just to name a few. The crowds were ok here except for the man who refused to move away from the Modigliani, even 10 minutes later I went back so I could have my turn in front of this masterpiece and he was still there, annoying!
