How do we build a transmission tower? Our Construction services team is currently building eleven transmission towers that will send electricity generated inside the Site C powerhouse to the nearby substation. Next up – stringing the transmission lines to connect the new dam fully to our grid. #poweredbyyou #bchydro #britishcolumbia #powerline #powerlines #electric #electricity #construction #constructionsite #equipment

They don’t ask for the grid, but they use it anyway.
Birds resting on powerlines, turning something rigid and human-made into a temporary perch, a pause, a pattern in the sky.
I keep coming back to these moments of overlap where the built world doesn’t disappear the natural one, it just becomes part of the view.
A quiet kind of adaptation. A shared line across the horizon. #birdwatching #powerlines #urbanwildlife #natureobservation #printmakingprocess
High voltage transmission lines carry thousands of volts across cities, mountains, and oceans. But did you know that something as simple as wind can slowly damage these massive power lines? ⚡🌬️
When wind flows across long cables, it creates a phenomenon called wind-induced vibration. This causes small but continuous cyclic motion in the wire. Over time, these vibrations can lead to metal fatigue, cracks, and even complete failure of the conductor.
That’s where vibration dampeners come in.
These small devices, usually clipped near transmission towers, absorb and reduce the energy caused by wind-driven oscillations. They act like shock absorbers for power lines — preventing long-term structural damage and increasing the lifespan of the entire transmission system.
Without them, constant vibration could silently weaken the grid. With them, power flows safely and reliably to millions of homes.
Small device. Massive protection. ⚡
Engineering isn’t always loud — sometimes it’s quietly preventing disasters.

Birds can safely sit on power lines because electricity only flows when there is a path between two points with different voltage.
When a bird lands on a single wire, both of its feet touch the same electrical potential. Since there’s no voltage difference across its body, no current flows through it. To the electricity, the bird basically doesn’t exist as a path.
Humans get shocked because we almost always create that path. If you touched a power line while standing on the ground, electricity would flow from the high-voltage wire, through your body, and into the ground — completing the circuit. That current passing through your body is what causes electrocution.
Birds only get electrocuted if they touch two different voltages at the same time, like one wire and another wire, or a wire and a grounded pole. In that case, their body becomes the bridge, and current flows through them just like it would through a human.
So the reason birds survive on power lines isn’t special resistance or insulation — it’s simply that they don’t complete the circuit.

Lightning strike hits power lines during a storm. Lines fall across the highway.
The driver sees them sparking on the asphalt.
No room to turn around. He keeps moving.
Drive over a live wire and 50,000 volts arc through the vehicle. Touch the ground while inside and you complete the circuit.
Safety protocol says stay in the cab and call for help.
The National Weather Service reports over 400 power line incidents annually during severe weather. Many are fatal.
This driver stayed inside. Made it through. Survived.

🎉 The very first T-pylons have now been energised!
💡 The first pylon design in nearly a century is now officially in use, with the energisation of 36 T-pylons between Bridgwater and Loxton in Somerset.
The energisation marks a major milestone in the #HinkleyConnectionProject, a new high-voltage #electricity line which will connect 6 million homes and businesses in the South West to home grown, low carbon #energy.
🎯 A further 80 T-pylons will be completed and energised by 2024. Click the link in our description to learn more about T-pylons and the Hinkley Connection project on our website 🖱
