Some more facts about houpara (Pseudopanax lessonii). Keep an eye out for those hybrids! They are out there. A quick Google search of "Pseudopanax crassifolius x lessonii" will get you some informative pictures of what these hybrid leaves look like! Thanks for the suggestion, @andrewsimmonsnz, to provide extra info for those plant nerds out there that want to know more than just how to identify the species! I'll try do these follow up reels for each of my plant vids from now on 🙏 Enjoy! #nzplants #nature #botany #pseudopanax #nativeplants #botany
Where to get plants? Here I am at Concept Botanica picking up a few tropical plants today - Philodendron, Pseudopanax, Vriesea & Bromeliad with some Lomandra grasses for another client. Claire x @conceptbotanicaltd
Tree defences. The New Zealand Lancewood, Pseudopanax crassifolius has developed leaves that make it unpalatable, until it reaches over 3.5 metres tall when it produces its true leaves. This was to prevent a dinosaur, that grew no taller than 3.00 metres, from eating it. Here in my garden we have a Silk Floss tree, Ceiba speciosa, that produces sharp thorns on its trunk to protect against predators, however, this tree has the ability to produce thorns on any branches that have been attacked. The predator in this case was a chainsaw on a pole with which I removed branches that were extending over the roof of the house. Might need a tougher chainsaw next time.
We're well into January and after six or so weeks, the wreath almost looks as fresh as the day it was hung on the front door. I've moved it to the back garden where we can still enjoy it and the birds can gorge on the Pseudopanax crassifolius berries. At some point, I'll remove the Aeonium cuttings and pot them up so they can produce roots and become new little plants. #winterwreath #wreath #christmaswreath
The Resilience of Lancewoods - And of You ☘️ I have a reading chair where I look out on the Lancewoods in my garden as they are buffeted by the coastal winds. 💨 I studied the Lancewood (Pseudopanax crassifolius) as an undergrad botanist; its evolutionary history stayed with me. It remains in its spindly juvenile stage for 15-20 years; it evolved to grow tall quickly to escape grazing moas. It’s an odd-looking tree to say the least. Its thin trunk belies its strength, made possible by its its trunk being: ✅ High in lignin (a strengthening, rigidifying plant polymer), densely wound with long fibres oriented vertically, like tightly packed cables. ✅ Low in soft parenchymal tissue. The Lancewood demonstrates that strength 💪🏼 can be rendered by what is unseen (or not logical) at first glance. Similarly, human strength and resilience originate from your gut microbiome, a world of unseen microbes living within you that drive your mood, immunity, sleep, appetite and digestion 🩺 Your microbiome, in turn, is influenced by how you sleep, what you eat, your stress levels, and your interactions with nature and each other. A healthy microbiome population helps buffer you from the equivalent of coastal winds - so tend it with care, nourish it well and let the resilience woven through the natural world remind you of the strength rising quietly within 💜 #guthealth #gutissues #probiotics #prebiotics #resilience #zesttwellness

We’ve noticed a sudden increase in kahukura butterflies recently. Here one is sipping nectar from a flowering Pseudopanax tree. If you look closely you can see the proboscis of the butterfly dipping into the flowers 😊 #butterfly #butterflies #butterflylove #redadmiral #redadmiralbutterfly #kahukura #invertebrate #invertebrates #invertebratesofinstagram #lepidoptera #flower #flowers #nectar #nectarfeeder #orokonui #orokonuiecosanctuary #sanctuary #shotoniphone #life #lifeonearth #probiscus
Planting the future. Our team has been busy adding natives — including pittosporum and five finger (pseudopanax) — along the escarpment of our Hua Nui organic vineyard. These plantings help boost biodiversity, provide shelter, and care for the land that shapes Palliser’s Martinborough home. #palliser #huanui #martinborough #wairarapa #organic
The jungle border that flanks one side of our nursery area is looking great at this time of year. Everything is pushing out huge new leaves now that we’ve had a bit of heat and plenty of rainfall. This border provides the perfect tropical style backdrop while acting as a functional barrier to create a warm microclimate for our nursery plants. From left to right you’ll spot the following plants: - Pseudopanax laetus - Brassaiopsis mitis - Musa basjoo - Persicaria runcinata ‘Purple Fantasy’ - Eriobitrya japonica #growparadise #tropicalgarden #tropicalplants #exoticgarden #tropicalgardensuk #gardening #ukgardens #gardeners #plantsofinstagram #brassaiopsismitis #pseudopanax #eriobotryajaponica
With Halloween just around the corner, Head Gardener Darren shares a few of our spikiest plants in the garden. 👻 Whilst, of course, they're not that scary, they are all fascinating in their own way and have great architectural form. 🌿 . . . #halloween #scaryplants #scary #spiky #spikyplants #agave #puya #colletia #zanthoxylum #pseudopanax #trebah #trebahgardens #trebahgarden #subtropicalgarden #subtropical #cornishgarden #coastalgarden #cornwalluk #cornwalllife #cornwallgardens #cornwall #garden #ukgardens #falmouth #penryn #truro #redruth #helston
Great landscaping using strongly contrasting foliage and many tender plants around Carbis Bay Hotel. The morning was rather misty but the plants shone through! Look out for Hydrangea [was Dichroa] febrifuga and Pseudopanax lessonii Gold Splash! #garden #gardening #gardentips #landscaping #landscapephotography #landscapedesign #plantpower #cornwall #cornishcoast #swcoastpath
